This is one of a pair of dolls that were offered for sale by the Smithsonian Store (and at the National Air and Space Museum's gift shop). Here is how they were described at the time: At the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, Lucy and Kevin visit the U.S. and Soviet Apollo-Soyuz mission exhibit. With the help of their imaginations, they become Soviet cosmonaut Alexei A. Leonov and American astronaut Thomas Stafford... blasting off to their historic 1975 rendezvous in space. Smithsonian Odyssey set includes two 8" soft-bodied character dolls: "Lucy as Leonov" and "Kevin as Stafford" dressed in authentic space suits. The dolls were accompanied by a similarly-themed book, Handshake In Space. Travel aboard the American and U.S.S.R. spacecrafts during their historic first meeting in space! Children join Kevin and Lucy as they are suddenly transported from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum into outer space, becoming U.S.S.R. cosmonaut Alexei Leonov and American astronaut Thomas Stafford. Lucy and Kevin come face-to-face with each other, as the hatches between the two spacecrafts open and the two friends shake hands, successfully completing the Apollo-Soyuz Mission. In Handshake in Space: The Apollo-Soyuz Test, children learn how a simple handshake between astronauts of two rival countries can offer hope that countries can set their differences aside and work together toward a common goal. This 32-page, beautifully illustrated book comes with additional information about the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and a glossary of key terms to extend the learning fun! The Smithsonian Odyssey doll line also included an Apollo 11 astronaut in full A7L spacesuit. |
