A bit surprised this presentation to the organization actually responsible for the shuttle launch vehicle program (rather then to an individual) didn't garner more collector interest (it sold for $895). Anyone recall seeing a similar piece?
Acquired from son whose mother worked for NASA at the Office of Space Transportation in Washington DC for 35 years.

Beyond the possibility that some potential bidders may have not seen the presentation's recipient (as there was nothing in the lot title to suggest such), the same detail might have served as a deterrent for some, as it might raise questions about how a presentation made to an office became the property of an individual.

That's all speculation, though.

There were 1,000 of these medium-size flags and 2,000 patches flown on board Columbia's maiden mission.

Similar organizational presentation (to Det. 5, 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron); but not as significant (in my view) as one presented to a primary program stakeholder.

Well Robert, that is exactly why I did not bid on it. It’s very hard for me to believe there is a clean chain of custody on something that certainly had to have been displayed in a prominent position in the organization and somehow ended up in an individual’s possession. I’m sure it could happen, but I had too many concerns about it.

A same style presentation made out to the State of California but originating from John Young's collection was auctioned by Heritage in April 2010 for $1,912.

No explanation was provided as to why Young had it, but one could guess it was prepared but never presented.

Ironically, the next lot in that same auction was presented directly to John Young himself but incorporated only a smaller flag and no flown patch. Still, seems odd he would have parted with such a memento aligned with a pinnacle career achievement.
