It's far more likely that somebody got a 1971 envelope signed by Glenn, typed a note on it ("With much love"!), and cut up an Ohio state flag; than that it's actually an item flown on MA-6 and certified as such by Glenn. |

Reminds me of lunar dust found in the cushions of the LM seats. What is the likelihood that a Marine and US Senator will cut a flag to pieces and then type on an envelope "With much love"? |

John Glenn would never disrespect any flag let alone cut one up. |

Envelope was sent to JSA and autograph is certified authentic by James Spence. Not the flag piece. 'Nuff said.(As well, you would think Glenn would have signed it above his signature, not across the envelope. There's also a grammar error in the "provenance.") |

Yes, the context of the whole thing is really odd. - The back of the envelope (from a conference in April 1971) has the date May 8, 1972 typed on the back.
- This is just about a week or so after Apollo 16 finished its mission.
- Why would one be thinking about Mercury-Atlas 6 at that moment? — perhaps because it was a few months past the 10 year anniversary of the mission (Feb. 62)?
Who knows but as Steve Z. pointed out, it's certainly odd workings to combine all this stuff, cut up a flag and add a phony note with a corny valedictory "love." |

I did contact the seller and I received a warning from eBay not to contact sellers about subjects not related to the purchase of an item on eBay or they will suspend my account. I guess I should not have used the word scam in my correspondence. |

If you click on Steve Zarelli's post on his blog about this, you'll see that he found an image of the envelope with just the signature two years after Glenn's death. This of course is proof that Glenn had nothing to do with the typewritten message added after he died. It would be nice if eBay's "Report Item" allowed for the reporter to include specific details, like a link to Steve's report, but if enough people report it (there is a tiny "Report item" link over on the right) maybe that would get eBay's attention. |

This has happened to me as well. I contacted one nefarious fake seller and within 5 minutes had a warning from eBay. Yet, the fake seller -- who had sold countless obvious fakes and had been reported by many people over a long period of time -- continued on eBay unfazed. It goes to show you where eBay's priorities are. I no longer waste my time contacting sellers of bad items. |
