I have a proposal to make... We all see on the Buy, Sell, Trade page the price people list an item for. Then when it is sold, many people remove the price and say sold. I think it would be beneficial to have people leave the price and not remove it. It gives us a historic record of what items are sold for and it is a valuable resource for the future. If it is just marked sold we have no record and no gauge of what is an appropriate price to buy or sell. Would like to hear others opinions on this. |

I agree. Keep prices up. |

I also agree, especially as this is a knowledgeable crowd and prices of items sold are more stable and often reflect a fair market price over some very high and some very low auction results I have seen. |

I support this as well. Important records for establishing current and historic market value (on the *real* market, not the cashed-up Sotheby's market)... |

Non-competitive posting rules on the Buy, Sell, Trade forum that mandate listing an asking price only capture what a seller is receptive to releasing an item for, not what buyers are willing to pay. Like it or not prices realized at auction are more accurately representative of market value (or at least reflect potential trend lines with respect to valuation). cS is a good venue for quicker transactions but it is not necessarily indicative of what the market is willing to pay for an item (the cS community and activities on its forums do not constitute a majority of the total market). |

Neither cS nor auctions can be used alone as a true gauge of the market. The market is too young, the items too varied and the audience is too specialized to provide any type of reliable guidance. I'm not opposed to suggesting to members to retain their listed prices, but short of turning off editing tools for the Buy, Sell, Trade forum, there is little way to enforce it. |

I agree that the actual sale price in here could be useful (albeit limited as pointed out). However, there's an administrative side that precludes it. Say I have Item-X for sale and I list it here for $75. Say it even has a real value of $75-100. A few days later I get an offer for $40 and take it because I need the cash. Now, I go back to my listing and just mark it sold. Pretty simple edit. But, what is being asked here is that I not only mark it as sold, but I also add/change the price to $40 as the actual sale price. I don't see very many people going to this effort. I sold Item-X. All I want/should see to do now is end the listing. |

My experience has been that I tend to let things go at a lower price to cSers than I might do on ebay or other sale vehicles. And likewise, I have gotten some great deals on cS from fellow members that I just could not find outside of cS. So, all this is to say: My sense is that items are probably somewhat undervalued on cS due to collegiality. Thoughts from others? |

My experience is although I believe I have gotten some great deals on collectSPACE it is the very rare and hard to find items that I purchase and they never come cheap.Value is subjective but I am always willing to pay more for the items to fill out my collection. So far I have not sold anything on cS just bought and traded. Even with this, the ability to find a price for an item that has sold is sometime hard if not impossible. What is a fair price for an Enterprise free flight #1 flown cue card, or a LEM storage container? There are many common items that proliferate the market and the auctions but many more unusual items seem to find there way to these forums. Although it is truly rare to have a one of a kind space item, many avid cS collectors have similar or exact items in your collections. I have no idea of a fair market price for many of the items in my collection but I bet if I post a topic under Opinions you guys could help. |

I am not asking for what a fair price would be, but just keeping the listed prices up so people have a record of what an asking price might have been and how price fluctuates over time. If people would change their listing to the price actually sold for that would be even better, but not mandatory. Rather than just marking an item sold, leave the price intact and put sold next to it. |

I believe to keep the records is not a bad idea. It can help especially a newbie collector with average stuff. In case of rarities it just makes no sense as the past price can only reflect the point sale under certain conditions... With the more common items - yes, it can guide a bit as the price range can differ in times. Even for the cheap items - we do not think twice to give $10 for a cover that can actually cost $5 or less, but if we talk about 10-20-50-100 of such covers? this can be a budget... Just a small example - I witnessed a cover sold on eBay for $40+. I got the same a couple of months later for 0.99. In any case - to feel the market you should live the market. |
