With the 50th anniversaries of two major lunar firsts impending (Apollos 8 and 11), what are member thoughts regarding these as opportunities for selling related items from their collections, or perhaps entire collections? |

I don't know about selling, but I would offer to display all or part of a collection at a local museum, for example. I've done that. |

That's great! I've been there, done that, and it was very gratifying. Would love to do it again. I'm just considering options at my age (67). |

Anniversaries will have some impact on the prices achieved at auction, but how much is anyones guess. |

Yep, so take a guess. No prizes or penalties.  Seriously, can we make any assumptions based on past Apollo anniversaries, or those of other major events (the 100th First Flight Anniversary comes to mind)? Will, for instance, the auctions be saturated with Armstrong autographs, or flown lucites? |

Auctions do tend to saturate on anniversaries (which is great for buyers), but if you have something special it usually stands out.You can always sell to fellow cS members.  |

Only you know what you have to offer, but my advice would be that if they are the sort of items that are regularly seen at auctions then hold off for the anniversary sales when you could take advantage of the hype which will attract interest from outside the collecting circle. If you have some rare items then offer them now. The reason I say this is that prices are currently extremely high and very few collectors have unlimited funds. The anniversary sales will hopefully pry some wonderful items out of collections all of which will be competing for the collectors' limited dollar. Decisions will have to be made by the collector as to which items to prioritise and which to ignore. Your items may run the risk of being gazumped by something even better. There is a bit of a dearth of good items at the moment and yours may top the bill in current auctions. I myself have sold a few items recently to build up a fighting fund for the upcoming much hoped for bonanza, but could spend now and regroup for 2019. Also, the world is living on credit and quite happy at the moment. Who knows what state it will be in in two years' time? Just my five cents worth (not a bid...) |

Good advice. I have in my collection a combination of the mundane, rare, and uniquely rare. Currently leaning towards selling the rare over the next 2-3 years, the mundane after the anniversary years, and passing on the last category to my heirs. Unless collectibles tax laws change, the heirs will receive along with some neat items, a step-up in the cost basis at the time of my [untimely  ] demise. |
