Topic: Worth of Explorer I satellite replica?

I was approached recently from someone inquiring if I would be interested in purchasing an Explorer I satellite replica in an estate sale. He had thrown out the idea that he would like $1,000 for it, but I have no idea if that is a reasonable request or not. It does appear to be in excellent condition, has a special wood case that it goes in, and appears to have been from that era. Any ideas on its worth? Thanks! |

If this is the same model I have seen, it is of the nose cap and instrument body (with antenna wire) but is absent the fourth stage motor. It does indeed appear to be vintage. |

That's the same model I saw. I just noticed that the instructions include mention of a motor section in a separate container, so this is one-half of a complete model. |

My opinion, if it is an original program full scale mock-up with the original transport case, then $1,000.00 is a fair price, maybe even a steal of a deal. If you do not want it please send him my way.  On edit: The link to the eBay listing and Robert's posting were not up when I saw this under a different, now merged thread. An incomplete model is not what I thought was being discussed. |

There are some clues which hint at the possibility it is a bit more then just a replica. More later once received/examined.
