We'll, I tried.I contacted the seller of this item, which is an autopen with an added inscription definitely not written by Armstrong. I provided the seller a link to the autopen pattern and explained that Neil confirmed that he did not sign or write on the US flag. The response was respectful, saying that after checking my link he was even more convinced that the signature is authentic. He even added a picture of Armstrong with the previous owner as proof. Um... ok. Oh well... hopefully no one will be fooled. |

Well at least today it was ended due to an error in the listing. Maybe it won't be back tomorrow. |

Even the inscription was worse, and very much into the flag. ugh. |

Well, I got a nice email back saying that I was not the only one who addressed the authenticity concerns so the seller decided to end the auction. I think the seller may just have been fooled into thinking it was authentic. |

I can kind of see their point, as it is definitely a variation, rather than a perfect example of the pattern in question. The differences that they note are there. The problem is that too many people take "autopen" to mean "exact same signature every time," when, in reality, there can be some slight changes, due to the item moving, someone bumping the machine, etc. If they went to Chris Spain's site with the idea that they were looking for a perfect match, I can easily see how that would make them more confident in the piece. That said, even 20 seconds of research would have told them that inscription was no good, so I'm not letting them completely off the hook. |

Yep... many people mistakenly believe that Autopens must be exact copies and a micrometer of difference means it is NOT an Autopen. In fact, there can be a significant amount of variation in the same pattern due to mechanical vibration, different pen type, the item slipping, the template getting worn out, etc. I run into a lot of highly distorted autopens. That said, Autopens — no matter how distorted — almost always have the same, flat, dead look with subtle signs of "chugging" effect. |
