A wonderful day for everyone here.I'm interested in one thing - a fact. Are there "collectors" among you, too, who want to change and agree [trade]? Or is it generally preferable [to sell] for money? |

I've always been open to any suitable exchanges or trades. |

Likewise. At times where money isn't required, trade is always the best option. No tax on trades. |

While I always like expanding my collection through purchases sometimes I'll get a "filler" piece that I may in time trade for what I might perceive as a more suitable piece in my collection. There is something a bit more exciting about trades though! The art of the deal! 😃 |

To buck the trend a bit I have to say I prefer buying. I tend to collect on a narrow rather than broad focus which means I don't usually have anything extra to trade. There's been a time or two where someone's had something I'm interested in but they're only looking for a trade so I'm out of luck. |

I also would prefer trading. However, it is very difficult to arrange a trade, if you have a highly specialized collection. In my case it is pioneer rocket mail and space mail as well as early crew signed space covers (launch KSC with NASA cachet, prime recovery ship, mission highlight like moon-landing Houston). |

Trading is always a great way to rid yourself of an item you may not want and pick up an item more to your scope of collecting, but in my experience it is hard to work a trade where both parties are happy with the valuation. Most collectors feel their items are more valuable than they may be and that happy median for a trade can be very illusive. I have made several successful trades over the years, but many more have not worked out to mutual satisfaction. |

Not into trades at all as it's (for me) I have one specialised field of interest. Branching out now to encompass others is too much to ask. |

I enjoy trading with other collectors and have found that it allows acquisition of items that would otherwise not be on the market. On occasion will purchase items knowing that they would possibly be helpful in a future trade, but still enjoy having them in the meantime. My thoughts are, for all trades that actually happen, the parties involved have agreed on equal "value" and thus perform the trade. With "value" viewed as more than how much an item would sell for on the open market, factors include a balance of how badly does each person want (need) the other person's item. Also, does the person initiating the trade (or if one person is pushing harder to make it happen) take a debit in value of their side to move the trade along. In the quest to complete a collection of a defined scope, the final remaining items can push the balance away from money and towards personal desire. At the end of the day I have always been happy with my trades, even when I have "lost" the monetary equation on face value. Obtaining a hard to find item, that I really want for my collection, makes up for the cost difference and puts me in a acceptable position to proceed with the trade. There are those that will only trade if they clearly "win" the monetary side...but in collecting items where it is not known exactly what they would bring at public auction, I can add value to my side in terms of gambling on a future sale, which has its enjoyment... ...the art of the deal.

I generally prefer to sell, as this is my way to fund further purchases but I also trade if there deal to made (usually its cheaper to trade some items to the item you truly want). |

I love to trade!!! For me it let's me worry less about the "value" of something, to get rid of that sometimes pesky hangon to an item because of it. I collect patches and by the way I do have hundreds to trade, rocket launches and shuttle mission/payload types. But for me, you can see by eBay and what I have paid for some, that they might go for 30, 50, 100 dollars. Well now I have an extra, but hey, finally found someone to trade with and they might not have many to trade, but they do have that one, perhaps lower value in someone else's eye patch, that I just happen to want or need. Well here you go, I will trade you this payload patch, that sold recently for $50 for that extra Spacehab worm patch, just cause I need it and we are trading. The values for me all become zero for the most part, for what I need is the goal in comparison to what I have "extra." The fact that two collectors have gotten together and sharing a hobby, enjoying it, brings some bonus points to it all as well. For me it's not all about making a profit but having fun and hopefully we are both winning. Sadly though, I have posted many notices for trade and hardly ever get any responses. Anyways per the question, I love to trade!!! |

Wonderful day friends. I see your reactions every day as well. Very interesting reading and how you collect materials for your collection as well. Just go on. I wish you a lot of success in your activities and I keep my thumbs all in there. |

From the other side of the table, I often describe my collection as a black hole. Pieces that enter it don't leave. As such, I don't enter into trade deals. I'll happily buy if the price is right, but I won't give a second thought to any piece that's "trade only".* *That is, unless the piece being sought is something that I don't want and is on eBay for roughly the price I'd pay for the piece being offered for trade. (For obvious reasons, that's not a thing that I've ever once seen happen, though I will occasionally check if I think there's a chance.) |
