I have a flown Apollo flag and COA from Gene Cernan. It has never been framed and I am looking for ideas on how to best present it. I do have an authentic crew patch and NASA meatball I can frame with it. And I was thinking maybe a crew signed photo or a Cernan on the moon photo but would love to see a picture if anyone else has framed a flown Apollo flag and would be willing to share. |

Personally, I would keep your framed piece simple and clutter free: don't put too much in it.I am fortunate to own a UK flag flown on Apollo 15 by Al Worden. Framed with an unflown Lion Brothers crew patch and a suitably signed 10x8 glossy, the flag is tacked to the mount with a single invisible stitch in each corner. There was no need for a plaque or descriptive plate of any kind as Al certified the flag itself. My only regret is that I asked the framer to mount the flag to a white card background - so the flag would really pop! But the finished piece in the flesh looks great so decided against the hassle and risk associated with unpicking the whole thing. I wouldn't mind seeing your finished piece. |

Nice job, My wife is from England so I do not want her to see this (she may want it). Very classy. My COA is a separate sheet of paper, so I already have another item to frame past the flag. |

The LOA from Al, and a photo of him holding both the letter and the flag are in an envelope attached to the back of the frame.I acquired the flag during the London Olympics of 2012. The patriotic juices were flowing and I felt compelled to buy it so I know where your wife is coming from.

I'm with Rick on this one. Keep it simple.Me? I'd hunt down a bullion patch of 17 (they are unbelievably good, look fantastic and very large) add a meatball at the bottom (or the top or side of the flag) It'll speak for itself. I would not crowd it and that's where I depart a little from other presentations I've seen. No signed pictures. Each to their own. |

I'm generally more into keeping it simple, as well, but sometimes a little more can be nice, too. I had this done a couple years ago, and I personally like the way it turned out.Perhaps a crew litho with smaller photos from the mission framing it would be nice (i.e. launch, LM on the lunar surface, Cernan with the flag and Earth in the background, etc.). Underneath that, the flag in the center with the Apollo 17 crew patch and a meatball patch on either side. Just something to think about. Done right, even a "busier" framing job could be a nice centerpiece to a collection. And I agree with storing the LOA in an envelope attached to the back. I've had this done with three or four things I've had framed. |

The Worden and ASTP are nicely done. Here are a couple of mine attached to certificates
One with a COA: And another with a small photo and plaque - I liked how the picture of my girlfriend, who is Italian, at her first Spacefest, me and McDivitt matched the colors of the flag so well - this was a gift for her so it is sentimental in addition to having a color scheme of white green and red: I like photos on top with flag and certificates - but whatever looks good to you. |

Beautiful displays all. Each have their merits and a busier piece still works well depending upon what is framed. The signed ASTP piece looks great.I'm a firm believer in the "Ronseal" method of framing. The display should be self explanatory or "does what it says on the tin!" |

Yep Rick, you know what it says as you are the owner. If others (home visitors as that's where I was coming from) do not or don't ask or you don't want to "show them off," no big deal. Goes both ways. By way of illustration, I have all of the shuttle 135 hand-signed individual crew members lithos signed to me. The best of intentions defeat me... just can't do it. |

Why not use a photo of Gene saluting the flag on the moon in the frame with it? |

I'm definitely in the less is more camp. Here is my Apollo 11 flag (ex: Aldrin), on it's "official" presentation. I put it in a simple gold frame. The way I somewhat accented the piece was putting in next to a framed, circa 1960 "Baldy" cartoon of the Mercury 7 astronauts showing all the problems the astronauts were having trying to get the manned Mercury program off the ground. The Mercury 7 cartoon was ex: Slayton, and all of the Mercury 7 astronauts signed a representative astronaut. The two framed items make a nice combo of the toughest time for the US manned space program, and the best time for the program. |

If you haven't already read it, it might be worth browsing Preserving, storing and framing flown flags as it contains useful advice on preserving and protecting the history and your investment. |

What about framing it in a hand made space art work? See one example of a postcard framed in a glow in the dark artwork here. |
