Less than a week after a set of Apollo 11 Autopen signatures sold for $1,613 on eBay (see here) now a well-known Apollo 11 photo with pre-printed signatures has sold for $1,000.I tried to contact the seller when it was first listed to politely point out that it was pre-printed but only got a rude reply in return. |

And it certainly wasn't one of a kind, unless that means a one of a kind sucker wasted $1000 on this. |

I think the main issue would not be the sucker that wasted the $1,000, but that eBay has fostered a safe haven for crooks and forgers. It takes years of collecting to accumulate the knowledge of many cS members to spot fakes, autopens, pre-prints and photo copies and we all had to start somewhere and learn.eBay makes it hard to stop these dealers as there is no easy reporting system for these sales and eBay does not seem to care if the criminals regularly sell fakes of all kinds (not just space related) on there site. If you receive an item and know its fake or not as described then your covered if not the eBay motto is buyer beware! It is sad when someone new to collecting is scammed out of hard earned cash and I know because I was the sucker years ago purchasing several forgeries from a German dealer that I later found out where worthless fakes. At least I had the common sense to destroy the ones I had to keep them from resale. |

I have a similar pre-print, and I spent $12 for it. I could never afford the real ones, so these look great on display. |

You would not believe how many of these I see a year... and how many times the individual thinks they have struck gold. #ShatteredDreams |

While I agree, I also find it unfortunate that there are buyers who don't use the tools available to them before making purchases. It wasn't too long ago that collectors didn't have Google, let alone dedicated online communities and websites, by which to do their own research and seek the advice of those more experienced. It was much harder 20 years ago and yet there are many who learned the hobby before the internet was a thing. So if you are savvy enough to be buying items online — especially $1,000 items — you should also be able to find the resources to steer you clear of pitfalls like this one. Caveat emptor means just that, buyer be(a)ware. |

Agreed... What annoys me is the abuse Chris referred to. Granted, many good sellers withdraw the items once shown evidence. I've been threatened with eBay reporting after one seller didn't like my challenge. He's since been banned for selling fake Armstrongs. But yes, self education is the key and it's a relentless task. Ain't something you learn in a week. |

The seller that sold the preprint is back at it. They have another one for $1000 on eBay.I reported the item as fraudulent but we all know how much eBay will do about it. |

I am betting that this is the same one. The picture is the same as the first one and the description has not changed. Also still 0 feedback. I am guessing the buyer figured it out and never paid for it. |

It is the same one. If you click the link in the original post on this thread, it says that the item has been re-listed, which redirects to the link posted by moonnut. |
