I'm looking at a Buzz Aldrin autograph on eBay, but not sure why the signature is so light?

Is it badly faded, or just signed that poorly? Insight appreciated.

Could it be a dreaded Silver Sharpie?

Someone thought it would be a good idea to display a photo signed in blue Sharpie. After a few years in the sun, maybe less, this is the result.

Looks like the dreaded UV damage from being displayed, as mentioned above.

That looks to be a Novaspace frame. The materials they use are excellent. It must have been in direct sunlight for awhile.

I thought it looked like a faded black Sharpie. The seller indicated it got UV glass in the frame, which I'm not sure of.

Is it worth the asking price in that condition?

Novaspace is as good as it gets when it comes to framing materials and I'd imagine the glazing material would be UV protecting. But in my opinion, the benefits of such glazing is at best limited and overrated.

Actually, I've had a sharpie do this to me a couple of times, it was signed as the first time using a new paint pen when it happened to me. The signature looks real good, just the way the liquid in the pen was shaken not stirred.

What do you guys think; is it worth $285? Also, is it likely to degrade further?

I think the value is about right, it still looks good. It will continue to degrade, fade if displayed on the wall in any form of light. Ideally you would want to store it out of the frame and kept in archival sleeves and binders. Perhaps take a good quality copy of it to keep in a frame if you want the image displayed.

If one digs through the archives, there are posts where Kim Poor mentioned he had problems with black sharpies fading... perhaps he got a bad batch of pens at one point. I suspect this is one of those examples. I agree with the poster above who said that UV protective framing only offers limited help. Added together with an unstable ink and too much UV light (or even just indoor fluorescent lighting) and signatures will fade.

It's a commonly-signed image, so I personally wouldn't spend nearly $300 on one that is already flawed. You'll always see the fading when you look at it and wish it were nicer. (Where's the enjoyment in that?) And if you upgrade later on, you'll then be stuck trying to re-sell a "damaged" piece. If this signature was a great deal, it wouldn't have lasted long on eBay.

Personally, I would get a nice bold example from Astronaut Archives for only $40 more... plus it comes with a mission inscription. Spend another $24 and get one with a nice inscription too. Then buy your own frame... one that will best suit the style of your home or office. If you're worried about fading, display a copy and keep the original in a protective binder.

At the very least, remember that Buzz has signed A LOT of these photos over the years. A better deal will turn up eventually... one that you won't regret buying later on. You can afford to be picky.

Beautiful NovaSpace frame. . . maybe offer to buy the frame? Just a thought.
