I came across this piece a while back and have always been wanting to do something different with it.
The matte has 34 signatures from Group 8 and Group 9 astronauts but the artwork itself is just a color photo of the original "One Man's Lifetime." The origins of this goes back to the Superior 1998 Spring Space Auction but I only got my hands on it a few years ago. I read "Riding Rockets" and developed a huge appreciation for the TFNGs and really wanted some of their history in my collection.
I am trying to decide what to replace the artwork with. I have a large vintage shuttle patch I am considering as well as potentially an original NASA photo of the STS-1 launch. I have an STS-1 flown flag presentation I could put in there as well and since Crippen's signature is on the matte, it might not look so off.
Any ideas that might make this a phenomenal finished piece would be great!

Certainly a different frame and larger area.
I would add another larger backdrop behind it to help with preservation and perhaps add along the edges thumbnail pics of the signers along with what you proposed. It is too small an area as it now stands.

I have two mats that have multi shuttle crew signatures. I used a black frame. Then I used a generic black and white photo from the Smithsonian collection (Udvar-Hazy). The photo is of a shuttle taken from the front looking aft. You cannot see the shuttle name so it goes great with multiple signatures! I can email a photo of them to you if you like to see.

Different frame definitely... the rest is up to you.
