Does anyone know whether the export of old Russian Sokol and Orlan gloves (from US to other countries) is prohibited under ITAR or EAR? My understanding is that these apply only to US material, but I'm not sure... And I also read that spacesuits have been removed from ITAR and switched to EAR (but I have no idea what that means, in practice). I'd like to bring my gloves from the US to Australia, but don't want to risk having customs confiscate them. Any advice would be much appreciated. |

Do not believe the EAR Commerce Control List addresses spacesuit components as an export controlled item therefore you should be fine. Both ITAR and EAR are oriented towards those commodities that can be re-purposed for dual use application (i.e. as enabling technology or information for a Defense weaponeering program or associated capability). My greater concern would be with loss via TSA screening or pilfering of luggage by baggage handlers. |

I have shipped both full Sokol suits, as well as gloves in and out of the US without incident. You should be fine. Cassandra Hatton Director, History of Science & Technology Senior Specialist, Fine Books and Manuscripts Bonhams 580 Madison Avenue New York, NY 10022 +1 (212) 461-6531
