Does anyone know what type/grade of pencil Paul Calle's Neil Armstrong print was signed with? |

Just to clarify, Chris, the box of pencils that you have — are those the ones your father used to draw the portrait and/or sign his name to the prints, or the ones that Armstrong used to sign them? Or are they all one and the same? |

I get the attention to detail, but keep in mind that there was always a limited source of suppliers for graphite for pencils in the US through the 20th century. Like many commodities, most graphite/clay compositions for pencil use came from only a couple of sources. The source of the wood around them, though, varied wildly throughout the postwar era.I went through art school in the late 80s, and my primary teacher was a old-school type who knew everything about the stuff he used. I learned a great deal from him, like this kind of info... |
