I found this eBay auction for an "Apollo 11 signed 'Earthrise' photo" and contacted the seller to let him know the signatures were suspect in my eyes. He informed me that he got it from a reputable dealer who is well trusted and sells several historical signatures, some even to top notch auction houses like Christie's.

This is the site that he gave me that he originally purchased the item from. If you scroll down and see the Apollo 11 item, it looks no good to me. Also the Armstrong autograph looks no good to me and the Apollo 1, no good to me. Beware...

Has anybody heard of this site or who is running this? They need to be shut down. Or am I wrong?

While it's not always true, a general guideline is the more elaborate and gaudy the matting and frame, the less likely the item is authentic.

This is what you often find in Las Vegas "gallery" tourist traps. The COA from a rubber stamping "forensic document examiner" is the coup de grĂ¢ce.

I looked up the name on the certificate, Drew V. Max and he is linked to the TV show "Pawn Stars." He also comes up in an internet search on ripoffreport.com (for a signed Ruth and Gehrig baseball) and linked to several bad authentications. When it says he's court certified, does that mean certified to go to court for bad signatures?

Steve, I referred the eBay seller to get a quick opinion from you, but he wasn't really wanting to hear the truth.

Wow... it even has the Apollo *17* plaque shown in the presentation instead of Apollo 11's.

It is advertised as an "Earthrise" photo but there is no lunar horizon in the photo, it is a photo of earth. More research would be needed to identify if it is an Apollo 11 mission photo or taken on another mission.

The Apollo 11 earthrise photo has Australia's landmass in frame, this photo doesn't.

This Apollo 8 photo of earth, (not earthrise) Apollo 8 photo of Earth seems to match. The landmass, broken cloud cover and phase is a close match. This Apollo 8 Earthrise photo is a similar earth phase but the cloud pattern differs and landmass less identifiable.

Thanks for the plug, but not a shock. Apparently the COA from a "forensic examiner" with no expertise or experience in space autographs is all he needs to sell an obvious fake with a clear conscience.

All times are CT (US)
