I am looking at purchasing an Armstrong autopen. It's identified as pattern no. 8 and features Armstrong in business attire. The seller claims this is a rare item, though I'm not convinced due to the fact of it being an autopen. Offers from $150 NZD. I'd love to eventually own a genuine Armstrong autograph on an Apollo 11 portrait, but the prices are way out of my league. Would an autopen be a reasonable stepping stone in the meantime? Where would you folks see the value of an item such as this? Thanks in advance for your advice. |

An autopen makes for a vintage, specific collectible. I have a couple in my NASA documents collection. But that is way too much money, especially for a business suit photo. You can get one of him in his white space suit for much less on eBay sometime. |

I'll start off saying that I don't collect autopens, but have observed several that have sold via eBay, etc. There are people that collect them and try to get all the pattern types of each astronaut. With Neil, some of the patterns are a little less seen than others. But that doesn't really mean that they are worth more, unless you are the one trying to get them all, to which it may have more value. I can say that I have seen a lot of the 4, 5 and 6 patterns that are listed on astroautopens.com I haven't seen a lot of the others... but a few. As a buyer I guess you have to make the judgement of what you want to pay. I would personally have the WSS or business suit without an autopen. For a business suit one, I wouldn't pay more than $25 to $30 for it honestly. And never take a seller's word on how rare or unique something is. If you study up and learn about the hobby, you will know ahead of time what is rare or not. Also, study what items sold price was, so you have a good idea of what a good and bad deal are. |

A WSS with a more desirable pattern (one of the later patterns ... number 6 on Chris Spain's site which resembles an authentic sig) can go for over $150 with disclosure that it's not the real thing.I have an Apollo 11 crew autopen with a Gemini era pattern of Neil. That, I've never seen before or since. | |
