Is this an Apollo 11 insurance cover or not?It has a hand-postmarker (as opposed to the machine cancellation) and the ink is much much darker than used on the commonly known insurance covers: |

While I cannot comment if this is an insurance cover, the signature styles are consistent with those on insurance covers. At the least, I think this was likely signed at the same time.Sometimes blue marker will age and turn a slate gray color. I'm not sure what causes it, but I would not be surprised if the ink on this cover was initially the same blue we see on the insurance covers. |

A lucky collector sent me a scan of an almost identical cover back in 2008. Lucky, because he bought it on eBay for around $50 (!).His cover has the same hand cancel and the same autographs in the same color. Except for the cancel being in a slightly different position, they are identical. Possibly these covers missed being canceled by the machine canceler, as many of the actual Apollo 11 Houston insurance covers had shifted and poorly applied machine cancels. Or possibly some were hand canceled as a favor to select collectors. Whatever, they are wonderful covers. Calling these insurance covers may not be accepted because of the strict rules governing what is and what isn't an Apollo insurance cover, but in actuality probably are insurance covers and were held by the families during the mission. | |
