This person is selling what he thinks is a piece of Challenger on eBay: 151938960072.
I have no documentation to prove this is from the Challenger. It appears to be some kind of coated, galvinized metal. The story is my uncle who lived in Cocoa Fl found this on the beach right after the explosion. After he passed away, this was going to be thrown away. I took it as I believe it is a piece of history.

I just sent the following to the seller. If I do not hear back from him/her, I will reach out to the OIG office at Kennedy:
Maybe you were unaware, but possession of and/or the attempt to sell debris from the space shuttle Challenger is in violation of Title 18, Section 641 of the U.S. Code, Theft of Government Property, which is subject to a maximum $10,000 fine, 10 years in prison or a combination of both. NASA has pursued and prosecuted eBay sellers in the past for even fake pieces of Challenger as acts of fraud.

Fortunately, NASA is also most of the time willing to forego charges if you cooperate and voluntarily turn over the suspected debris. You should contact the NASA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 321-867-4714 to begin procedures for handing over the suspected debris.

The seller may have just further soiled the jeans he is wearing in the interesting product photo.

The seller ended the auction. He replied that he will make arrangements to turn the piece over to NASA.

That is good news. Glad he did the right thing. I would be interested to find out if it is part of 51-L.
