These space shuttle tiles look fake to me. Any thoughts? |

I am by no means an expert but I agree they don't look right. Plus I thought it was illegal to export Shuttle Tiles out of the US. |

Not saying the auction description is accurate (more information is needed), but if it is, then it is not a shuttle tile. Rather, it is the stock material for a shuttle tile and therefore not covered by the same export rules. That is why the retail souvenirs pictured below and these custom presentations can be sold worldwide. |

Sorry, I'm brand new but I just saw this post and thought I might be able to help. Actual shuttle tiles that were made to go on the orbiter should look like this:While not all are black, they all will have the identification number on them, otherwise they are likely just the insulation samples or, if you know someone at the KSC Tile Facility and they let you take one home for some odd reason, an actual test sample. (Speculating, but I'd guess something like that would be more rare than actual shuttle tiles though.) |

Not all; tiles that flew on multiple space shuttle flights before being removed can be absent of their original printed numbers, having been eroded during reentry. The example tile pictured appears to be one of the "tiles for teachers" samples distributed through GSAXcess after the end of the space shuttle program. These tiles are offered for use by schools and museums. |
