Probably from a member of the family. Also could have been found in the trash, if he threw them away. We will not see new astronauts' checks as banks no longer return cancelled checks.

I've been fascinated by cancelled checks as well. Are these collectable because they are a relatively inexpensive way to obtain an autograph? If not, what is the appeal? |

For me personally, collecting an astronaut's signed check is all about the autograph. It is an inexpensive alternative to acquiring an autograph. I wouldn't want all my autographs this way, but for some signatures, it is a great option. For example, I recently purchased a small lot of Donn Eisele signed checks. I haven't researched Eisele's autograph on a photo, but I'm certain the price I paid per check is a fraction of an authenticated Eisele signed photo. I believe, another benefit of a bank check is that one can be almost certain that the signature is authentic. |

In this case, Cunningham offers them directly through his website (currently for $35 each). He's been selling them since at least 2005.(Assuming the seller isn't taking a loss, s/he may have struck a deal for a bulk lot.) quote: Originally posted by TLIGuy: If not, what is the appeal?
The (generally) lower cost is part of the appeal, as is the authenticity as mentioned. They can also attract interest for the differences between the astronauts' legal signature and autograph styles. For example, long after Buzz Aldrin ceased signing "Edwin," he offered his old cancelled checks signed with his former legal name. |

They are technically from the astronaut's personal collections, which certainly can appeal to space enthusiasts. A check is a nice snapshot of a moment in an astronauts life. |
