I have a photo of the lunar surface, labeled "Prototype" and scale 1:39,140 (nice round number). The title is "Lunar Landing Site Monitoring Photomap (LLM) Landing Site 3" ... the launch date of 18 July 1969 makes it Apollo 11.I can't find anything online with this title, and I'm wondering if it could possibly have ended up being called a descent monitoring photomap? Any thoughts? Another piece I'm trying to figure out the value of, or whether I should try to list it on eBay or go through an auction house. |

The July 18th launch date was one of the contingent windows for Apollo 11. |

Lou, I figured, thank you for confirming. I was just hoping someone knew about the title of this prototype map, and whether it could have become "descent monitoring" for the final version, OR if this is something else and I just can't find a printed final version of this one. |

There was a similar post here the other day about Lunar Orbiter images and this looks very similar (I also saw your post on the Lunar Orbiter facebook page but thought it was the same as the one already on here!).The area covered by the photomap was one of the intended landing sites for Apollo 11 (site 3) rather than the actual one at Mare Tranquilitatis. The co-ordinates given put it in Sinus Medii, near the landing sites of the Surveyor 4 and 6 probes, and I've taken one of your photos and superimposed it at the correct location in Google Moon so you can get an idea of scale: You can find the actual LO image used at the Apollo Image Atlas, but it is probably from Lunar Orbiter IV. |

My mistake about the map coverage. That particular area was well covered by missions 1 to 3 as part of the 'Apollo Zone of Interest' mission photography plan. Perhaps the best is from the second mission, around this image as it also has higher resolution images of the landing ellipse and it seems likely that this set were the ones used to construct your proposed landing site photographs. Some of the images from your Facebook post seem to be from mission 3, and this area was covered by images 86-103 on that one. |
