I recently saw several items for sale on eBay listed as "From the estate of Deke Slayton." The items were an STS-114 pin, ribbon and associated pins. The person running the ad assured me they came from his wife Bobbie Slayton.

Please let me know if you think its ethical to sell items received by the family years after the death of the astronaut? I posted this in reply to his email:

I can assure you that any items received by Bobbie Slayton after the death of Deke Slayton would be from the personal collection of Bobbie Slayton.

Just to see if the general space community agrees I am going to post this entire conversation on collectSPACE with a copy of your listing. I am an AVID collector and anything listed as from Deke Slayton's estate should mean that he had held, used or was presented that item and NOT that a family member was given that item years after his death.

I may be wrong in my interpretation but we will see what the others think. Good luck on your sale. I will not be bidding on any of your items.

What's wrong with selling such items? If a person has no interest in space items, there's only two choices for such items: someone who does have interest, or the trash. What's the better alternative?

Personally, I don't expect my space items to be around for my great-grandchildren. I would hope my kid(s) would get some enjoyment out of them, whether it's keeping them or selling them so they can get some enjoyment from something else - or selling them if they're in a jam.

Other astronauts' family members have sold space items belonging to them - including, off the top of my head, Mary Irwin.

I don't think he's objecting to the sale, but that items from 2005 are being described as coming from Deke Slayton's estate, rather than Bobbie Slayton's. These items didn't exist during Deke's lifetime.

That is my point. I would have been very happy with "From the collection of Bobbie Slayton" or even from the Slayton Family.

Deke passed away many years before these items were given to his family.

The gentleman selling these items is doing so at the request of the family of the collector who owned them. The collector, "Mike" passed away several months ago.

Bill, the seller, is wonderful to deal with. He is doing an outstanding job. He has on occasion asked questions of this board to acquire information so he can most accurately list items on eBay.

I've purchased two items from him. Great job Bill. Keep up the good work. I'm confused by and don't understand the criticism directed at him.

For the record, I never mentioned a name. I wanted to know for general information as I overreacted seeing this listed. But after an hour on the phone with Bill I can tell he is an awesome individual with a heart of gold.

Bill, quick recovery on your knee and thank you for reaching out to me. You're A-okay.

I do, too. Because I was reacting to this: "Please let me know if you think its ethical to sell items received by the family years after the death of the astronaut?"
