In the new monthly RR Auction, there is a crew-signed Apollo 11 patch cover. It certainly looks authentic and is Steve Zarelli pre-certified. Here is my question: Could this be one of the covers described by Michael Collins in Carrying the Fire, the ones that were in a shoebox in crew quarters and "disappeared" under mysterious circumstances? I am not suggesting anything untoward here, nor am I casting aspersions upon the consignor or the item. I am just curious whether this could be one of those long lost "non-insurance covers," particularly since it is signed in a fashion just like the insurance covers and only lacks the stamp and cancel? |

Bidding is already over $1,500 on this cover. Any opinions on whether this cover might be from the shoebox full of covers that disappeared from crew quarters in the weeks before the Apollo 11 launch? |

I also remember reading that story and I have also wondered why some of the covers have not appeared on the market. It's been over 40 years. |

I do not purport to be a cover expert, but it is my understanding that in addition to the mystery box, signed covers were obtained by NASA personnel and never cancelled. In short, there is no way to know which covers may have been taken and which were obtained legitimately. Also, to my knowledge, over the years these uncancelled covers have been openly traded by reputable sellers and collectors with no one ever making legal claim to them. If someone else have any additional information on the matter, please share. |

More likely yes from knowing the background and provenance of how the covers came into light, their origin, and how they came to my attention many years ago.I do believe they were indeed a part of the crew-owned insurance cover batches. But not only with unstamped and non- cancelled Apollo 11 insurance covers, but also, with about a dozen unflown Robbins medallions. It was never determined, however, if the autographed covers (involving two types of insurance covers that I know of) along with the reported Collins' missing medallions were in fact "stolen" or not from crew quarters here at Kennedy. But apparently all did come from a single source when the referred to "missing" covers and Robbins started to come to surface here on the Florida Space Coast. A handful of the insurance covers, Types 1 and 3, along with several Robbins medals from man's first lunar landing mission were involved when brought to my attention with visits by involved non-astronaut family members. | |
