Any advice here would be super. I recently acquired a dollar bill signed by Neil Armstrong — little did I know, some fool has placed a large strip of tape across the bill as a rookie method of 'laminating'. This has done more damage than good and as ink has started to blur.

Anyone have any idea how to remove the tape without destroying the signature? It looks to me like that bill has been signed using a sharpie-type pen.

Take it to a paper conservation expert. These folks can perform miracles. My guess is that they will probably submerge it a special bath to loosen the adhesive (which has the added benefit of neutralizing the ph levels). Luckily since its currency its more resilient to this kind of treatment.

There is a dollar bill signed by the Apollo 1 crew currently for sale needing this kind of treatment as well.

You might try "UN-DU"; amazing stuff. Available on eBay.

Thank you for your help everyone, I'll do that. The bill I purchased is similar to the Apollo 1 dollar... why do people do these things?

As a kid, I laminated ticket stubs from the 1965 and 1987 World Series, figuring it would preserve them better. It still boggles my mind that I did that, and I wish there was an easy way to undo it. If the person was like me, they probably just reasoned that it would be the best way to keep the dollar in good condition, not thinking about things such as future value or the possible acid content of the tape.

A good paper conservator can remove most if not all stains in many cases. The complicating factor here is the autograph. Whatever solvent bath the conservator would use to remove the stains may also affect the ink from the signature.

It doesn't hurt to ask, but I would not be overly optimistic a lot can be done without compromising the signature.

Its a shame really — whoever ends up with the Apollo 1 dollar bill will be in the same boat.
