What a waste of a good book.

Wonder what happened to the rest of the book? Is this the future now, where autographs get cut from books and lithos and get slabbed for sale?

With Buzz, this has been going on for a while. His signature is worth more than a book with his signature. You can buy a signed copy of Encounter with Tiber for $20 or less.

I have seen several of the signatures cut from this or other books up for sale for more than the signed book. Hate to see a book cut up but hopefully it gets donated and someone will have a copy to read.

This is the first time I have seen practically the whole page displayed.

This sort of activity is nothing new. People have been cutting up signed items for years in an attempt to maximize their profits. (And, of course, space artifacts aren't immune from Mr. Scissorhands either.) It's not uncommon to see the clipping of signatures and other handwriting from letters written by historic figures... including signed letters from Lincoln.

Fortunately, a good percentage of the collector market realizes that intact items are more valuable and more desirable. I highly doubt this item will sell for the asking price... and if it does, it will be the exception, not the rule.

As Mark indicated, this is not new, regrettably.

On the sports chat boards there is a constant stream of signatures cut from documents, checks, etc. to manufacture "1 of 1" custom cards. For a fee, some trading card companies will take your cut and place it in a "custom 1 of 1" trading card. Often, to fit the signature in the allotted card template, they have to trim a portion of the signature!

Amazingly, there are people who pay good cash for these type of cards. You can take a signature from a $100 signed document and manufacture a cut card someone will pay $400 for. Truly astonishing.

Oh, I know this isn't new. Aside from cards, what is new (to me at least) is the slabbing of the cut signature, at least with astronaut sigs. I'm just waiting for someone to take an "ordinary" NASA astronaut's signature from a litho, cut the autograph, slab it and send it out to authenticate and then sell it.

Actually, that's already been done. I've seen several signatures from the Mercury 7 litho (the one signed by the six astronauts and Betty Grissom), that have been slabbed by PSA. I've also seen signatures cut from various US Air Force Gathering of Eagles lithos that have been slabbed.

Spoke too soon. 370950015044 is clearly cut from a litho.
