Would appreciate the group's opinion on whether e-bay Item # 271158201543, a MA-6 USS Randolph cover, is authentic or a Riser fake.

Randy, I personally would not buy this one. Use of the embossed envelope raises questions whether this is a Riser fake cover, as well as the claim that it is a carried cover. What do others think?

I second what Dave said. Although it doesn't look exactly like the Risers I've seen, there are enough similarities to set alarm bells off in my mind (e.g. the postal stationary and typed cachet).

I'm going to be a decenter on this one.

Firstly, lets be careful. The USS Randolph was involved in two missions, MR-4 and MA-6. I've checked my various sources and I've found several examples of Riser fakes for MR-4 but so far not a single MA-6 USS Randolph fake. That doesn't mean they don't exist, but it appears that if they exist they are extremely rare.

Now to the cover. A couple of things that bother me as far as being a riser fake. Firstly, the postmark is over inked which is definitely not typical of Riser covers. Secondly the extra 4c stamp is hard to explain. All the riser covers I've seen have the exact postage, either 7c postal stationary or in one possible case a 6c postal stationary with a single extra 1c stamp. This cover would therefore be unique if a riser fake.

Also just found another similar cover. Amazing! See lot 230926068126. The pilot signatures look the same.

On balance, I think this is a genuine cover.

The cover proved to be very popular. It sold for $821 from 23 bids!

The second similar cover just brought an amazing $1475! This is the level expected of a MR-3 USS Lake Champlain if not higher.

The second one was also signed by Glenn - guess that made the difference!

The Lake Champlain made an amazing $2483 - are we seeing a renaissance of early US space covers?

I agree with Florian, the Lake Champlain price was certainly amazing. I don't know about early space covers but the better and the unusual Recovery Ship covers appear to be increasing in price. All but the standard Navy cachets and the numbered Beck Printed covers are bringing good prices, especially signed covers. This includes covers with unusual cachets but standard postmarks. Anything different is selling. I've bid on over a dozen covers lately and only got two fairly standard Beck covers. Some have gone for 2-3 times what I would have paid a year or two ago. Looks like I'll have to up my bidding!

There's another USS Randolph helicopter recovery cover for sale on eBay. This time it's from MR-4 and is signed by the co-pilot (lot 230935318536). With 2.5 hrs left the bidding is up to $660 from 18 bids. It's being sold by gabi-2311 who often has amazing covers for sale.

Three Mercury helicopter recovery covers within a couple of weeks. Wow!
