I had sent him a message — surely you can not be serious, this in not even a crude forgery, its just plain awful. Interesting to see if he responds.

Actually, this IS an authentic Neil Armstrong autograph!

There is another Neil Armstrong, but he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a referee. The 3x5 card referenced above is HIS signature, not that of the first man on the moon.

Here's another example.

There is nothing in the listing that is untrue, as he never mentions anything about astronauts or NASA. However, the listing is a bit dishonest (likely unintentionally so) through the absence of any hockey reference since there are very few people who (unfortunately for the hockey Neil Armstrong) associate that name with the Hockey Hall of Famer. Most of the seller's other auctions are sports items as well.

Plus, he's listed it in "Collectibles> Historical Memorabilia> Astronauts & Space Travel> Astronauts"!

It's been a while since I listed anything on eBay, but if I recall correctly they would suggest a category based on keywords in the item title. It's possible this seller was listing a number of items and quickly clicking through without realizing it went into the space category.

I suspect user error is more likely at work here than intentional deceit.

I don't know. He says it is the autograph of the "great Neil Armstrong". I know the Neil Armstrong of hockey is an inductee in the Hockey Hall of Fame but it is because he was an official. He was never a player, other than minor league. If he had said respected, Hockey Hall of Famer than fine, but it does appear his description could be considered deceptive.

I had sent him a message prior to this thread starting and another saying he should clarify the this Neil Armstrong is the hockey one. I have had no response.

If I were selling a autograph of a person who happened to share a name with of one of the most recognized people of the 20th century I would be darn careful. I would state numerous times this was not that other famous Armstrong to make sure the buyer knew what they were buying. I hope the seller corrects this before someone buys this.

Regardless, it shows what a joke eBay is, that they can't even monitor potential disingenuous descriptions.

They claim to police forgeries, when it suits them, or when a self-proclaimed "authenticator" snitches to them about a perfectly good item. Yet the real forgeries miraculously pass them by and generate income for them.

Despite two messages to the seller he never replied nor did he change his listing to indicate it is the hockey player.

I do believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, but considering he listed it under space travel, astronauts, autographs, and he has not changed the listing to reflect it is a hockey player not an astronaut, then I have to draw the conclusion he is trying to deceive people into buying this hockey player autograph (if it is real itself).

I stand corrected. He may not have been trying to deceive. The seller responded to me late this evening. He said he thought that he said it was from the hockey player and he will change the listing accordingly.
