My grandfather was a policeman in Newark NJ when the Hindenburg crashed. He gave this to my mother, and she gave it to me. It's about 4-6 square inches of fabric, with a note included telling how this was a piece of the Hindenburg that was given to him by a policeman who was at the scene. Anyway there you go. If there are any experts out there who can look at this and tell me anything as to authenticity/rarity. Quarter added for scale. Fabric is folded so you see the silvery outside and the brownish tint of the other side. Thanks in advance. |

Your artifact appears consistent with this authenticated specimen on display at Udvar Hazy. That metalic looking coating should be the doping which contributed to the fire (and its rapid propagation through the airship). |

Since you're up the Parkway from them (and me!), have you tried contacting the historical society at Lakehurst? |

I have a few pieces of Hindenburg skin and yes, your piece looks to be authentic.Scott is correct, wait a minute, Scott is ALWAYS correct because he does his homework, LOL. The silver skin was coated with a dope that was responsible for the rapid expansion of the fire. In fact it's most likely the reason for the fire starting at the tail section in the first place. Is there a chemical smell coming off the fabric? Is the silver layer separating from the brown fabric? I would make sure to document every fact about this section of skin, keep as much of the original story and history with it and have it mounted in a two sided glass frame. |
