My father was a member of the Houston Jaycees (Junior Chambers of Commerce) and they printed commemorative currency to throw (tickertape style) at Houston's celebratory welcome parade for the astronauts of Apollo 11 in 1969. These "bills" are in excellent condition... clean, crisp and just slightly larger than a real bill. They are pretty intricately designed and fun to read, too. Serial numbers found on it include N R G 2 XL R 8 and E Z 2 XL B A Moonman, etc. There are lots of little gems on the bills (printed on both sides) and it has a 1969 copyright from a Houston printing company. Aside from all the little hidden treasures found in the design, there's text written in a Apollo 11-shaped box that reads: "This commemorative currency honors the amazing space flight and walk on the moon by Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins -- July 16, 20, 24, 1969" (referring to launch, landing and return dates). Does anyone know what the value of these bills might be? I remember my mom letting my brothers play with them as play money as a kid. I was about 8 and, even then, knew they were worth keeping and not playing with, so I stored a stash for myself. I'm 42 now and just rediscovered my stash, so I'm curious. Either way, I enjoy them. I think they're special. |

I'll try to scan one soon. I just don't have a scanner here. Just to clarify, too, I'm not sure what "commercial in nature" means, but these are not legal tender and they were not sold. It amounts to a flyer, I suppose. A dollar shaped flyer in the "value" of 100 dollars. While looking online yesterday, I saw some commemorative versions that have pictures of the astronauts, etc. that are going for a buck or so. Those are 11 dollar denominations or so ... and they seem to be printed well after the fact ... not an original memento. Thanks for responding, just the same. I'll see what I can do to post images of it. |

Boy, unless we are talking about TWO different things here, and I don't think we are... I bought a package of 25 to 50 of these cellophane wrapped with a header card, marked "25-cents", either locally or in Wapakoneta on one of my 1960's visit there.I will look for that and scan and post if I can find it. But don't hold your breath! The printer... Premiere Printing in Houston? They made some cachets for the Apollo 8 stamp. I don't remember what they did for Apollo 11. |

I really feel like we may be talking about different things. This was printed in 1969 by Texantics Unlimited in Houston. My father, as I said, was a member of the Jaycees and they had them printed. It even says "Welcome Apollo Astronauts - Houston Jaycees". Granted, Texantics could have personalized the item for the Jaycees and anyone else who asked, but these were given out at the parade. Not sold. Any collector, of course, could sell them. We had stacks and stacks of them simply because my dad just had so many. Does yours have the sort of serial numbers that I described. They're the same on everyone, of course. I really need to scan my soon. I'll try! |

No, you are right, Texantics is the name printed on these... not Premiere printing. The ones I have have that quirky "serial number" you talked about in one of your earliest posts about these... The IASP space collectors group had some of these with a space on it where they rubberstamped their logo on them... I have a mailing from "someone" when these were issued that printed some envelopes with the design on the back of the mailer in a huge (larger than # 10 envelope)... and I think there is a huge reproduction of the face of the bill that they mailed in them. The ones I have were sold commercially, and do not have any Jaycees printing on them. | |
