Just got an unbelievable response from a seller on eBay. He is selling the following autopen:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2193903959

I wrote him to let him know it is an autopen. Here is his response:

"Yes, I had someone from NASA email me and let me know. I'm glad I didn't state it was authentic, for I wasn't sure when I listed it if it was either. Thanks!"

Yes that's right, he's keeping it up unedited and thinks what he is doing is OK just because he doesn't say "It is authentic"! Also note that his closeup scan of the signature is badly distorted (perhaps to fool people attempting to match it to an autopen pattern?) People like this guy make me sick.

I just received a second response from him after I wrote him and told him his ad implied that it was handsigned.

"Hello,

I don't feel I imply anything, for I did not know what it was other than a
signature, which is what it is! I don't think I come across authenticating
it in the least. The picture is signed and that's exactly what I state."

Oh brother! And this guy has 100% feedback!

Caveat emptor.

Scott, do you want to write to the "lucky" winner when this auction is over, or should I?
Let's see how badly this seller wants to keep that perfect feedback rating.

Hi Chet,
[Unfortunately] I told him already that I would not write his bidders (I had some paranoid nut seller freak out on me recently in a similar situation) but told him someone else might write the bidder and he would have to refund the money. So by all means have at it!

I will.

He'll have to go through the trouble of writing more emails and (hopefully) refunding the money in the end anyway; maybe the next time he'll just be more up front about things and realize that taking people for a ride isn't worth the bother.
(Wish the same could be said for outright forgeries - - at least autopens are "provable" commodities).

Well amazingly this closed at $127 but possibly by a shill bidder winning. Hoipefully. I emailed him and asked if it was an authentic autograph actually hand signed on the photo byt Armstrong himself. Here is his reply and my reply to him. He knowingly committed a fraud in my opinion by trying to dance around terms:
...........................................
<To my disbelief, ive been contacted by a few ebayers and told that this item
IS his signature, but it is an old auto pen official photo and not wrote on
(it really is hard to tell). This item was with a load of stuff from a
basement such as airforce one items, Nasa invite to a shuttle launch so all
those things made me pretty sure it was a genuine autograph!! So please,
take this as not a genuine autograph and then there will be no problems.>

Dear "Treasure Chest" - thanks for your reply. It is in fact, an autopen, I have several examples of same and moderate an online discussion group of astronaut collectibles (not to mention handle marketing for one of the Apollo astronauts). Quite frankly this is worth no more than $10 at best, and, to boot, it does not say anywhere in your description anything to make one believe it is NOT an authentic autograph. Which to me is very misleading. I have made sure the 400+ members of our group and 1 other have been made aware of this along with the misleading description - which should state in it it is an autopen and not authentic.

All the best,

Al
...................................
To his "disbelief" my left foot. If anyone would care to voice your opinions, Id be happy to furnish his email and of course, I would suggest using due care in regards to potential furture purchases.

I think Al may very well be right, and this could be a shill bid that "won" the auction.
Nevertheless, I wrote to the high bidder anyway, on the chance it's just some newbie that doesn't know any better, to alert him/her that this is an autopen signature.
We'll see what happens.
