Amazingly bad -- so bad, it should win some kind of award. Even ebay should be able to recognize this as a fake and toss it.

But even more amazing and laughable to me was how this seller said he personally got the autograph: "ES WAR EIN KLEINER KAMPF HERRN ARMSTRONG DAVON ZU ÜBERZEUGEN, ABER ER HAT ES LETZTLICH DANN DOCH GETAN. ) "

Really?

He convinced "Mr. Armstrong" after a little effort in which he "finally" agreed??!?!?!

Oh, pleeeeeeeeeeease....

Perhaps Neil has developed an "alternate" signature to prevent people from reselling his signed items on eBay.

I cannot believe anyone would produce something as bad as this but even more unbelievable is that they think someone will bid on it!

Oh! By the way. I have a few spare Neil's. If anyone wants one let me know and I will get my pen out. Oops, forget that last bit after the 'and'. Only $10 each plus $1,000,000 for shipping.

Sorry, I should not joke. The number of fakes on eBay is not funny.

Best wishes

Hey, looks like the item was removed by the seller. He describes that according to some emails making him aware of the fact it's not an authentically signed autograph he removes the item to keep his reputation.

He also adds (for those who can't read German) that some emails were rather nasty...
Therefore :
Though we don't know the intentions of a seller (whether he deliberately offered a fake or was just fooled himself once) I recommend to be at least friendly in your first email. Not everybody offering a supposed fake is a crook ! (though some folks in one of the astro-groups now declare every European a crook)

I accept in part what you say but this item would have taken a nanosecond to confirm it was a fake. Any quality dealer would at least check their items authenticity before putting something up for sale. I accept mistakes can be made, even by the best, but in this case it was so bad that at the very least we must question the dealer's competence.

We should also remember the dealer claimed they had obtained it in person and I know what that suggests the dealer is? Perhaps we might care to believe someone is going around impersonating Mr Armstrong? However, I know which I think is the most likely.

I do agree that a first eMail is not the time to get nasty but I do understand the strong feelings of those who sent them.

Regarding the view that all Europeans are crooks, well as a European, I find this view objectionable. I am sure some of us are, but I doubt we are any worse (or better) than the rest of the World.

Best wishes

Florian,
The guy is a crook! I took Miracoli's (I wish people would also sign their name ... first name at least) advice and clicked on sellers other auctions and every other autograph that I looked at was a bad fake. I've been collecting autographs from many different fields for twenty years now and certainly don't consider myself an expert ... but you didn't need to be an expert to figure out that the Armstrong was a fake ... well the same applied to the rest of his lots!! This joker should be removed from eBay!!

Hi Rob,

completely agree with your comment - but you should always consider that not every seller on ebay (in fact the minor percentage) is a dealer nor does any research. We can't exspect that the majority out there knows at all how a real Armstrong should look like.
Therefore a friendly email should be the least we can do and ask the seller.

Again we never know for sure his real intentions, also not in this case. (though the "high" startprice could indicate he has some knowledge)

Anyway, glad he removed the item and so be it.

best regards

Dan,

good point - that's what I always recommend to collectors - check their other auctions running ! Usually this gives a good indication if someone is selling only the best of the best (Armstrong, the Pope, Beatles, John F. Kennedy) or has other strange autographs available you may know better than the one in question !

Again my point is not whether the Armstrong is good or not but the general behaviour of some folks immediately jumping on somebody, threatening and cursing at the person.
We should at least give someone a chance to defend himself.

I'm all for friendly e-mails, but in this case the guy said he got the signature in person.

He didn't really. He's wasting peoples time.

And, he was trying to make a fast buck on some unsuspecting novice collector.

No room for these kind.

If he replied that in emails that he got it inperson, then, of course, he should be stopped.
However the original offer only said that he had to ask Armstrong several times, it didn't say he got it inperson nor does it now in the updated text.
(or did I get anything wrong...hell I should understand German language !!! :-)) )

rjurek349's original post indicated it was an in-person item but I apologise if I misunderstood this point. I do not read German so could not read the item as originally listed. However, in saying that he had to ask Mr Armstrong several times does imply an in-person signing.

I do think that you are being too kind to this dealer.

Best wishes
