For sale, a flown Apollo 14 Franklin Mint medal (NGC certified, handwritten COA, Letters). My research from years ago. A very unique offer.

The Apollo 14 flown Franklin Mint medals are very special. Their counterparts, the flown Robbins medals are also wonderful, but there is an important difference.

The Franklin medals were aboard the mission, taped together within three PPKs and then remained with the crew members thereafter. More importantly, while the Robbins were available for purchase by all astronauts within the Astronaut Flight Office, these Franklin medals went only to the 3 man crew. And the Robbins went back to Robbins post-flight to be engraved, cleaned-up, and then returned to the Astronaut Office.

The Apollo 14 Franklin Mint medals were the only flown Franklin medals other then one Apollo 13, which was melted.

For sale here is one of the flown Apollo 14 medals, encapsulated by NGC, along with a handwritten COA from Edgar Mitchell. Also included is the original coin flip initialed as flown by Mitchell.

In addition and what makes this the finest one possible to own is a handwritten letter COA as well as a letter to me confirming some facts about the medals including that he put them in coin flips. I did the research for him and he was eager for me to document them. Along with the letter, he also provided me and it is also included, a certified photocopy of the page of his, Shepard's and Roosa's PPK inventory that listed the medals. He certified and signed each PPK page in ink as well. So, essentially five letters are included.

A handwritten COA is rare as he typed and signed most, if not all others. Aside from that, he only had about 20 of the flown medals remaining when I helped him get them certified. Shepard and Roosa died years before collecting space got legs so there are few if any that have ever surfaced from them. And, even if any did, they would not have a COA. In total there were 65 of these in each PPK (195) with 50 or so that went back to Franklin to be melted for their issue of a mini coin containing a fraction of flown metal for the public. So, with 150 compared to 303 Robbins and likely just one with a handwritten COA from a moonwalker along with certified PPK page lists, well,

This is as good as it gets. $9,500. Serious inquiries please contact me at: assetalt@aol.com

I have been able to confirm that NGC has certified only seven of these medallions to date.

In addition, I researched that there only two medallions in all (certified and not) that have a handwritten COA from Dr. Mitchell.

I own the other handwritten COA, NGC certified flown Apollo 14 Franklin Mint medallion from Edgar Mitchell. (For the record: it is number 0112).

I can also attest that the COA is exquisite and very detailed, at least the one I have. Sometimes Dr. Mitchell's handwriting can be hard to read on other items; but not on these COA's. He took his time.

This medallion fits a unique niche of rare flown numismatic items with an amazing backstory, which Howard documents at the link above. (Well worth the read, by the way.) Rare, indeed!

All times are CT (US)
