For the last two years I have been working on digitizing 60's and 70's satellite tapes that were recorded at tracking stations. Among the stations are Winkfield, Grand Forks and Santiago. A 1/2 inch playback unit is currently under repairs. So far we have been getting samples with a 1/4 inch 4-track stereo playback unit, while the tape is 1/2 and has 7 tracks. Eventually everything will be online as public domain.

Doing this together with a few other people in our free time and personal funding.

In order to process the raw telemetry signal we're going to need documentation that details the telemetry signal of the specific satellite and how to process it. Going off the documentation and labels on the tapes, we are looking at the following satellites:

  • TD-1
  • TD-1A
  • ESRO 1A
  • HEOS A2
  • Upsilon 61 (Explorer 12?)
  • Ariel 3

  • 1963 30B = TRS 1(ERS 9)
    Alt names: TRS 1(D), TRS-4, ERS9

  • 1963 14B = ERS 5
Alt names: TRS 2, TRS 1(B), DASH 1, and ERS5

  • 1963 14C= ERS 6
Alt names: TRS 1(C), TRS 3, and ERS 6

  • 1963-14A = MIDAS 6
Alt names: Missile Defense Alarm System 6, West Ford (2)

I am also looking for Apollo/Skylab/Pioneer 11 documentation that may help us determine what our computer tapes were used for.

  • PN F/G OFF-LINE DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION" "NASA/ARC PC-262

  • Specification for the Operating System for the Saturn V Launch Computer Complex, Volume 1, Revision 1: MSFC No. III-4-440-4

  • Operator Reference Manual for SLCC Progranrning System, MSFC No. lII-4-440-5, IBM No. 68-F11-0003, dated 15 June 1968.

  • User Instructions for Saturn V Launch Computer Complex Operating System and Test Programs: MSFC No. III-4-462-1

Always open for questions and help. — Niels
