So I have a flown tile from Columbia that is accompanied by all of the disposition paperwork to include flown tags and so on. In addition, it appears the tile was used for educational purposes as it has related educational paperwork and seems to have been discolored post scrapping from torches as the SCRAP stamp is almost gone and the surface has a rainbow coloring in the middle.I'm looking to trade the tile for one of the following... - A flown tile of any type from Discovery or Endeavour as I do not have one from these two shuttles yet.
- A flown white tile from any of the orbiters.
- A flown external TPS blanket that is complete (not a strip or partial blanket) from any shuttle.
- Don't know if they ever made any fit or test tiles for Enterprise but if one of those is available I'd be interested in that too.
- A complete (both halves) used SRB Frangible Nut.
For all items, I would like accompanying paperwork to verify but I will entertain items that don't have it case by case. Here are some images of the tile being offered.

I could offer a tracer pattern tile with complete documentation from Discovery. The tile is placed directly under the left main window. Email if interested. |

I do, but be aware that I am awaiting some responses from above replies. Also, assuming your location is correct I cannot ship to Italy as I abide by ITAR regulations and cannot ship a tile outside of the United States. |

Okay, I know the ban is there but in a sentence or two can someone please explain why an international prohibit exists? Forgive me if that has been answered before now. |

ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) restricts movement of defence related-articles (both import and export), the tiles, at least at the birth of the Shuttle Program, were new aerospace technology. It makes sense that the tiles (as well as other aerospace materials) were added to the ITAR restrictions list in order to protect foreign governments (Russia) from stealing/using them (not that it worked; Buran).I believe it is simply a matter of "what goes on the list stays on the list" unless there is a specific reason to remove it, and sadly, collecting isn't reason enough. |

Thanks for that. Appreciate it mate. I did try and swot up on it online but couldn't figure out quite why. |

Shuttle tiles are not called out specifically, but fall within a class of technology defined under Category VX (Spacecraft and Related articles) of the ITAR Munitions list: (19) Spacecraft heat shields or heat sinks specially designed for atmospheric entry or re-entry, and specially designed parts and components therefor (MT if usable in rockets, SLVs, missiles, drones, or UAVs... |

Or to put it more bluntly. Nuclear warheads are reentering spacecraft as well and any technology that would assist another nation in mastering that sort of space travel is held back. |

...if usable in rockets, SLVs, missiles, drones, or UAVs Yes, but the paperwork states "heavily damaged" and "scrap". Obviously, some authority could declare them no more ITAR-restricted. "if usable in rockets" does no more apply. |

Adversaries glean useful information from damaged tech. ITAR in addition to actual technology also restricts export of information with dual use application. |

Yep still available. Also I'll add that I am interested in getting ahold of a complete (both halves) used frangible nut from the SRBs. |

Have both halves of a frangible nut ever been made available? All I've ever seen are single halves. |

It depends on what you mean by "made available." The Kansas Cosmosphere has an SRB hold-down bolt and frangible nut display. |

An example as presented to John Glenn by Kennedy Space Center after his STS-95 flight. Each half is mounted to a plaque, with the flat side facing outwards, making a nice pair of book ends. |

I suppose to finish my thought: Have any complete frangible nuts become available to the public? Again, only have seen halves. |

Yes, they have. I have seen two pairs (from two different astronauts) sell, and know of a third pair in a private collection. |

We do have an unused intact full nut, with a deactivated booster cartridge in one of the holes. Oh, as well as a nut half from STS-108. |

This presentation with both halves was sold via an online auction not too long ago. |
