It's been a few years since the last one so I think maybe it's time to launch a new European Grab Bag: EGB-VI.

If there's enough interest I will put together a small box with a target weight of around 3kg max.

We should wait to form at least a provisional list before we start mailing it around as it's cheaper to send the box between all the participants in one country first before making the more expensive international delivery to a new country. It's worth noting that although international postage can be pretty expensive there are often alternatives to the Post Office these days that offer competitive prices for non-urgent packages.

Just for the record, the box would start out with a mixture of vintage U.S. space ephemera. Nothing hugely valuable maybe, but hopefully nothing that could be described as junk. There will be patches, decals, covers, lithos, photos, pins, pamphlets, maybe some autographs... a real mixture.

Basically it's a box filled with miscellaneous space memorabilia. When it arrives you look through and take out anything that interests you then you load it with goodies from your own collection and send it on its way to the next person in the chain.

The box isn't going to be full of Armstrong WSS SPs and Lunar Module leg struts but most collectors have some extras and bits and pieces that might be of interest to others. This is a chance to pass them on to others who might appreciate them.

I'm starting to put the box together for a launch in the next week or two. Hopefully we'll gain more participants in the meantime but there's already enough to make it worthwhile.

Not sure yet if the box will be under 3kg or under 5kg. Definitely not over 5kg though.

The launch of the EGB-VI was supposed to take place yesterday but technical issues have led to a delay. I'm currently looking at a Friday or Saturday launch window.

The launch weight is just under 4kg and I'm pretty happy with the payload.

If you've ever wondered what's really in those 'balance of consignment' lots you see listed in some of the space auctions - let me tell you, it's nowhere near as good as what's in the EGB-VI at launch.

Maybe, but unfortunately the payload has been installed in the RCCA (Rectangular Cardboard Containment Assembly or 'box') and I won't be interfering with it again at this stage.

I should clarify that it's not full of Armstrong WSS SPs, bits of unflown LEM hardware and spare A7L gloves, but there's a good mix of vintage ephemera in there that I hope will get the grab bag off to a good start.

Here's a preliminary flight-path for the EGB-VI:

[moved to later post]

This is subject to change. I may change the order as we go along if more people join or if people already in the list haven't provided mailing addresses in time.

Sorry if anyone feels they'd rather be higher or lower in the list. You can contact me directly if you have a strong preference.

The aim is to minimize the international mailings (which are obviously more expensive) and the distance for each trip. There are still a few long jumps in there but that can't really be avoided.

If you haven't given a location in your collectSPACE profile please add one or send me a mail so that I can add it to the list.

Maybe people could also send their mailing address by email to me so that I can forward it to the appropriate person when the time comes. In any case please send your details to the person before you in the list when the EGB is getting close to you.

The EGB-VI is on its way to Belgium.

Some general guidelines for the grab-bag:

  • I know that it can be difficult to find time but please try not to hang on to the box for more than a week.
  • I'm mailing the box at just under 4kg and I would say it should not be allowed to hit 5kg.
  • I would encourage people to take out heavy items and put in light items where possible. If you can bring it under 3kg then it will be even cheaper to mail.
  • If the box is too heavy don't hesitate to take out material to discard if you're sure it's really of little interest to anyone. Even ESA staff don't want to read back issues of the ESA Bulletin so if you find any of those in there just chuck them...
  • You may want to consider alternatives to your local post office for mailing.
  • Feel free to repackage the contents in a new box if the old one is too big, or has been damaged en-route.

If only I'd had time to hand paint it on the EGB-VI fairing before launch...

Could I switch with Dietrich, so that I would be the last in DE. I do have some items for my friend Daniel in Czech Republic. So I would be able to add them directly and forward the pack to Daniel? Would this work for you?
