The heat shields of the Apollo Command Modules contained plugs that could be unscrewed so as to access various systems and instruments after the mission. This is a rare example from Apollo 7, the first manned mission of that program. The piece itself is approximately 1" x 1.5" x 0.5", and the bottom third shows the blackening caused by the heat of reentry. It is enclosed in an acrylic shaped like the Command Module, complete with two little indentations for windows. The base is flat, and shows that this display is more desirable than acrylics with more vague origins. This one was produced by North American Rockwell, the makers of the spacecraft. There are three felt pads to protect this base. This is nearly identical to one that sold just two months ago for $1750. I say "nearly" identical because the tip of that one was completely chipped off. This one just has a crack at that same tip. As you might have seen in the photo of the base, there is a tiny chip missing on a bottom corner; this is not visible from the top. The price is $1700, plus another $20 for insured Priority Mail shipping. I could take two monthly payments. |
