I have a dozen items on eBay, ending at about 9:45 p.m. EST on Tuesday. (eBay ID stsmithva.) I set the opening bid for all of them at $49 or less.

They include:

  • An Apollo 16 launch invitation letter signed by Swigert, Shepard, Irwin, Worden, Evans, Stafford, Brand, and Apollo manager George Low
  • A large print of the international space treaty signed by the Apollo X crew (Young, Stafford, Cernan)
  • Flown on Apollo 8: several pieces of Kapton tape/foil in a vintage display
  • Several Apollo CM controls (knob, talkback indicator, circuit breaker, etc.), both flight-ready and made for the simulator
Here are some pictures and more specific details about other items, all ending Tuesday night.

A collection of launch badges for all Apollo lunar landing missions. (That is, 11-17.) 13's is signed by Fred Haise:

A toggle switch made to be flown on an Apollo Command Module:

A complex flight-ready Apollo CM component made to evaporate moisture out of an astronaut's space suit, with documentation:

A space shuttle launch manual, hundreds of pages long, printed in January 1986 and signed by people who were working at launch control at Kennedy Space Center on the morning of the Challenger disaster:

But probably the most interesting item never got near Kennedy Space Center, Houston, or space. It's from New York City, where in 1963 a huge parade was held for Gordon Cooper after his Mercury mission.

Here is a newspaper photograph of the event:

Notice the headline "Broadway Meets Cooper"? Well, the Broadway street signs had actually been replaced for the day. Look at the bottom left of that photo... then at this frame from the very start of a 1963 newsreel:

Yes, for the occasion, Broadway became Mercury Way. And here is one of those rare, 52-year-old Mercury Way street signs:

If you know of any New Yorkers who might be interested in a great combination of space-and-NYC history, please let them know about this!
