- Several Apollo CM controls (knob, talkback indicator, circuit breaker, etc.), both flight-ready and made for the simulator
Here are some pictures and more specific details about other items, all ending Tuesday night.A collection of launch badges for all Apollo lunar landing missions. But probably the most interesting item never got near Kennedy Space Center, Houston, or space. It's from New York City, where in 1963 a huge parade was held for Gordon Cooper after his Mercury mission. Here is a newspaper photograph of the event: Notice the headline "Broadway Meets Cooper"? Well, the Broadway street signs had actually been replaced for the day. Look at the bottom left of that photo... then at this frame from the very start of a 1963 newsreel: Yes, for the occasion, Broadway became Mercury Way. And here is one of those rare, 52-year-old Mercury Way street signs: If you know of any New Yorkers who might be interested in a great combination of space-and-NYC history, please let them know about this! |
