The book Apollo Expeditions to the Moon was produced by NASA in 1975. It is a superb overview of the history and accomplishments of the program. (Its entire contents are conveniently online.) This is a copy of that book signed by Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, Alan Shepard, Jim Lovell, and Gene Cernan. It comes with a Steve Zarelli Letter of Authenticity, and it is not inscribed. Here is the great two-page spread showing the voyage to the moon and back, with the autographs on the right-side page: The signatures page: The cover: Michael Collins signed it recently through Astronaut Central, so it comes with a COA from them for his autograph, and a photo of him with the signed book: You probably noticed another signature: that of Roy Neal. According to his Kennedy Space Center biography, in 1957 he became the first network correspondent to report from the Cape. His live coverage on NBC of the Apollo 11 landing was produced as a record, and he reported on the Apollo 13 crisis as a pool reporter for all three of the major networks at that time. He went on to cover shuttle launches until he retired in 1986, and he passed away in 2003. Often, a signature that doesn't quite match the others on a piece is a distraction, but I don't think that could be said in this case. Neal was there from the beginning and played a huge role in telling the world the story of Apollo. It's fair to say that the six Apollo astronauts who signed this happen to be the five who made the biggest impression on the American public. Shepard was the first American in space and later walked on the moon; the Apollo 11 crew flew on the mission in which humans first walked on something besides Earth; Lovell was on the first mission to the moon and later became even more famous and admired as commander of Apollo 13; and Cernan, as his book title says, was the last man on the moon. |

The binding of the book could be a little tighter, but it is in overall very fine condition. As a nice comparison, the top bid in a recent auction on a book signed by "just" Armstrong and Aldrin was $3600. (That didn't include the buyer's premium, so the price was really over $4000... and that one had stamps stuck on the pages.) Books signed by the Apollo 11 crew have sold for such prices as $4182 (inscribed) and $4773; and, incredibly, two have sold for over $7000. Please let me know if you are interested, and we can discuss a price. I will e-mail the buyer a higher-resolution copy of the photo of Collins with the book. I appreciate that a signed photo makes for a better display, but this signed book is practically an historic document. It has dozens of photos, and is the story of Apollo in the astronauts' own words. I hope that somebody will want to add this extraordinary item to his or her collection. | |
