An exceptionally rare United States flag, which was brought aboard the historic 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the moon, will be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders Auctions on June 25. Interested bidders may participate in the auction online.
The silk American flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate reading: ''This flag traveled to the Moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969.'' Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins signed the certificate, which features the mission's emblem. The bottom of the certificate carries the memorable words of Neil Armstrong, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Auction house owner Nate Sanders said, "The 46th anniversary of the epic Apollo 11 trip to the moon is coming up next month. Collectors continue to cherish memorabilia from the Apollo program."
In January 2014, Nate D. Sanders Auctions sold a similar Apollo 11 flag for $63,195. The flag is very rare, one of only a few to ever be auctioned.
Bidding for the flag begins at $50,000.
