I have a 16x20 Bruce McCandless II photo signed in blue sharpie. Originally obtained from Destiny Space. Was framed for a short time and was removed and stored flat to save some space.

NOTE: The framer used tape at the back side top to secure the photo to the matting. When the photo was removed it incurred some paper loss to the back side edge. This cannot be seen from the front.

Priced at $100. Free shipping via tube to lower 48 USA. Add 3% for PayPal.

A really nice and historic image. There aren't that many more historic in-flight images.

I tried to sell a vintage NASA litho of the same image with a really nice inscription "First Test Flight of the MMU" and listed it a half dozen times and it failed to attract any bids/sell. I just can't believe the apparent apathy toward the Shuttle program.

Not really apathy, but maybe people already have something signed by McCandless or desire something space-flown on shuttle or more unique. I know a dealer who posted on cS but no longer is selling (spacecoaststuff) did a good business in selling shuttle program photos, manuals and artifacts. Tastes and interests can vary among collectors.

Many years ago I had the pleasure of being in a meeting with the late Sonny Carter and Bruce McCandless. I found it almost impossible to reconcile the small stature, gray haired grandfather-like gentleman I was talking to with the image of the astronaut in the MMU floating far enough away from Challenger that, if he had a problem with the MMU, he might not have been recovered. That was my meeting with Bruce McCandless. Just blew my mind.

Would you accept an offer on the print, or are you firm on your price?

Even though I already have four McCandless signed photos, I was interested in this one until I saw the tape damage on the back. I'm stunned that any framer would put tape on the back of any photograph. They ruined a perfectly good picture.

Regarding the question of apathy. I admit I was apathetic about the shuttle program at first. For me the biggest problem was that it came so late after the Apollo program ended. The gap gave a lot of space enthusiasts such as myself the opportunity to move on to other things. When they finally did launch, I was excited, but the lack of TV coverage quickly put an end to any enthusiasm I might have had.

The McCandless EVA pictured here gave me a brief bit of hope that I might be able to rekindle the joy I'd lost. But again, that was short-lived.

I didn't get emotionally committed to the shuttle program until the last few years. Getting the NASA channel helped a lot. After that, I started collecting some key signed shuttle astronaut photos. Once I finished with my Mercury, Gemini and Apollo photos, I was free to pursue the shuttle astronauts full time. I probably have a third of the signed shuttle crew photos. What I'm mostly looking for though is EVA photos. I have the ones from the usual sources, but those are very limited. I wish more astronauts would make signed EVA photos more available.
