I am interested in purchasing something that is space flown such as an astronaut glove (could be NASA or worn by a cosmonaut). Would also consider something else that is space flown potentially.

Please let me know if you have anything for sale. Email is dmpaul007@gmail.com Thanks. — David

David, welcome to collectSPACE.

The U.S. Postal Service has made having a genuine space flown artifact be inexpensive for you. On a good day on eBay, you can find a 1983 flown Challenger cover or a 1994 Endeavour flown stamp (with cover) in the $10-$15 price range.

Our collectSPACE community hopes that you will visit us often and not only learn about space but find out where you can meet astronauts (in the "Sightings" section).

Thanks for that idea. I'll take a look at that as well.

David, you can forget about buying a flown glove originating from NASA. They are either used again in training and then scrapped or passed in to the ownership of the Smithsonian.

The odd exception are shuttle TMG gloves that have shown up, typically on eBay that have been extensively used in underwater training. The life cycle of such gloves is that they have in all likelihood flown but there is little or no way of establishing that provenance.

An occasional flown Soviet glove pops up from time to time (some worn by a NASA astronaut) at auction or through reputable dealers like Florian Noller or Alex Panchenko. Both have extensive websites.

But buyer beware - other Soviet gloves purporting to have been flown have questionable provenance.

You will find plenty of flown memorabilia around, The Space Collective and The Space Store being two who offer lots.

Though I would make mention that The Space Store has a consignments section, of whom one particular cS member is consigning many things over the coming weeks so it may be wise to keep your eye out there.

Most wonderful thing I saw for sale was a flown glove of a certain cosmonaut, while that particular cosmonaut was at that very moment on his first trip into space.

David - welcome to collectSPACE and space collecting! Along with the great ideas above, you'll note a lot of fantastic advertisers and posters to this site who professionally deal with vetted material with solid provenance, often directly from astronaut families or estates — places like Farthest Reaches, Spaceflori, Moonpans, Astronaut Central (and their Astro-Auction site), USSR Airspace, Lunar Legacies — just to name a few. There are many of them listed on the Websites section of collectSPACE, which you can find here.

I highly recommend you click through them and check them out, and familiarize yourself with prices and who offers what.

And of course, there are the auctions — RR, Regency-Superior, Heritage, and Bonhams, which hold dedicated space auctions a couple of times a year. And RR holds a monthly auction. Right now, for example, there are four flown "gotcha" photos from Paul Weitz (commander of STS-6) that flew in his flight data file. The auction closes today, and there isn't a single bid on them, with a very low opening price for the type.

So as you can see, there are opportunities everywhere. Just do your research, and ask a lot of questions. You'll be knee-deep in flown space stuff before you know it!

Good point on the RR sale ending tonight. I nearly forgot myself! There's some great flown items at reasonable high bids as of this moment. The cue cards from Apollo 12 and 17 seem to be way below market value. I'm surprised where they are given the auction ends in less than 12 hours.

I just noticed that the monthly RR auction has two space categories: "Space" and "Space Artifacts." Interesting items in each category.

I will also add that you might want to think about an area (or areas) of collecting that interest you before you randomly jump into buying mode. Personally, I've found collecting to be much more rewarding when you focus your energy. You could collect within a program (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, shuttle, or unmanned programs). You could also collect in an area (flown items, covers, hardware, autographs, etc.)

However you decide to attack it's always good to have a plan.

Good luck and welcome.

As many cS'ers know, I specialised in space flown covers and letters.

Focusing on one area is a sage suggestion, my area is flown memorabilia, and when funds permit, Mercury memorabilia.

The Scott presented J-2 engine pitch actuator was a nice piece.
