SOLD The two astronauts of the Gemini 4 accomplished quite a lot during their four-day mission in June of 1965. They tripled the record for longest American space flight (from 34 hours to four days). They performed scientific experiments and for the first time attempted an orbital rendezvous. There were several other "firsts", but most famously Edward H. White II performed America's first extravehicular activity (spacewalk); while James A. McDivitt took the first truly beautiful photographs in space.Just a few months after the mission, United Press International published a hardcover book covering the events, all the way from the astronauts' training to their celebratory tour. It's an excellent 50-page book, the highlight being page after page of color photos of White's space walk. (In fact, the title is Gemini: America's Historic Walk in Space.) White and McDivitt signed this copy, on a page showing them in their spacesuits. Sadly, barely a year later White was one of the astronauts to die in the Apollo 1 fire. Vintage items signed by both Gemini 4 crew members are in high demand — an inscribed GT-4 signed photo, for example, sold recently for $1804. This book is even more extraordinary and rare than a signed photo – you'd be getting dozens of photos and a complete history of the mission, published the very year it occurred. SOLD $1400. You could pay in two or three installments if you like. SOLD A close-up of the signatures (White really took advantage of all that space — his signature is five inches long!): Here is the book's cover... |
