It is a little late, but I have been producing something of very high quality for quite a while now in order to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of Apollo 11. What is it? I can't tell you yet, but I will reveal all in a few weeks time!It contains flown Apollo 11 material (not a cut up map or anything), is limited to 50 pieces and is very practical. The price is £299.99 ($508). Stay tuned! |

Yes, you could use it daily if you wanted to... but would you want to? |

I'm curious, but not $500 curious. If we buy it and find out what it is, and decide we'd rather not, is that an option or is the purchase binding? |

Oh I wasn't suggesting you purchase it in advance, I just wanted to give everyone a few weeks to save some money so that if you wanted it, you could buy it when it is announced!Feel free to buy one in advance if you fancy a bit more suspense, but yes you can receive a refund within 30 days of the delivery date if you wanted. |

Sounds intriguing.... but if it's not "a cut up map or anything", how are you going to produce 50 of them? |

Could be flown covers, or lead from pencils, too many possibilities. Parachute lines, the list goes on... |

I can exclude flown covers. If all 50 items are sold, 50 x 500 = 25,000 $ will be paid for them. An Apollo 11 flown cover costs at least in this range. Moreover, who would like to own an acrylic with a small white piece of a flown Apollo 11 cover? |

Walter is right, it is not flown covers. |

Hey all - just wanted to let you know that these are a little behind schedule, but it shouldn't be much longer now. Sorry, I'm a perfectionist! I will keep you guys posted! |

No interest in this thread for a month...Personally, even though Apollo 11 is my main interest in collecting, I'm not interested either. Not at $500 with no clue as to what the "mystery" item would/could be. If it's such a "great" thing that people would be interested in adding to their collections, why not just say that it is? |

I'm pretty sure Richard is not trying to get anyone to buy (or even reserve) it sight unseen. He was just offering a teaser that something was coming... |

As I have said before, I am not asking anyone to reserve one. I have had several emails asking the same thing and my reply has been the same to each one. Robert is correct - I am just offering a teaser. Lets not be so critical. |

Ladies and gentlemen, it is here. Better late than never as they say! I said this could either be displayed or used in a practical sense, and it has been designed specifically for those two purposes. So, what is it? It is a pen containing flown Apollo 11 command module (CM) kapton foil! But this is not just any pen, oh no no no. These executive-grade pens are expertly hand crafted using semi-precious gemstones, which gives them the weight and feel of true quality — a fitting tribute to the legendary Apollo 11 mission. Patience is a virtue here as each pen takes hours upon hours to hand-make and engrave, with every attention paid to the magnificent level detail required. They really are the finest quality pens I have ever used (and I am an advocate of Mont Blanc!). The pen is: - Individually Hand-Made
- Made of Semi-Precious Black Gemstones
- Has 24ct Gold and Plantinum Accents
- Lower Barrel Engraved in Gold with the famous "Apollo 11 Flag Planting" Depiction
- Lower Barrel Engraved in Gold with the "Apollo 11" Mission Inscription
- Upper Barrel Engraved in Gold with the "NASA" Inscription
- Gold Clip Engraved with the "Apollo 11" Mission Inscription
- Contains a piece of Genuine, Flown - Apollo 11 Command Module Kapton Foil
- Comes ready for display in a beautiful, glossy, solid dark red wood box with a soft lining:
- the inner red wood box is engraved in gold with the Apollo 11 logo
- the inner red wood box is engraved in gold with "Apollo 11 Flown Kapton Foil 45th Anniversary Pen, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins, Made history on July 20, 1969"
- Comes with a Numbered Certificate of Authenticity
- Limited to 50 Pieces Worldwide
What makes this pen so special: An expert level of patience, skill and talent goes into creating these wonderful pens. Firstly, with the barrel material of the pens being both hard and brittle in its unfinished state, shaping them must be done slowly and carefully by turning them using traditional artisan techniques. Once the general shape has been achieved, the time consuming job of precision shaping becomes progressively finer, to a point where the barrels are cut by less than one thousandth of an inch at a time, until ultimately the perfect shape is achieved. After the perfect shape has been achieved, the pen is engraved precisely and perfectly, after which a gold filling is applied to complete the design. Next comes the Kapton Foil encased in acrylic. The foil itself is carefully set within a block of acrylic, and once hardened, the large block is precision cut into strips and then painstakingly shaped and polished by hand. Then pen is then assembled using the Gold and Platinum accents. Lastly, a coat of microcrystalline wax is applied to the finished piece, which is then buffed and polished. This wax has a higher melting point than most human hands and is used to protect the piece. Microcrystalline wax is even used by the British Museum to protect their artefacts. A couple of questions: - It looks like the pen itself says "Apollo II" (written with the roman numerals for "2") not Apollo 11. Is this an error?
- What is the provenance of the flown foil?

- The pen pictured here was a sample made for photography purposes only. The II on the clip was an error I picked up when it was sent to me, but don't worry, the finished version actually says "Apollo 11".
- The material came from one of Ken Havekotte's old presentations.
