Hello. It's been a long while since I last posted, so a quick introduction to anyone who's joined since. My name's Matt Thomas and I was one of the regular spacesuit nuts on cS during much of the last decade. I collected quite widely but mainly focused on MGA era spacesuit hardware, photos and documents. In that time I built up a great collection, found and identified some very rare prototype pieces and even stumbled upon an intriguing mystery concerning a famous figure from cold war history (on which subject more later).

So, I had a lot of fun collecting and now I'm looking forward to having a lot of fun selling it all. I'm buying and renovating a house so everything will be going over the coming weeks to fund the work. I'll add individual items to this thread as I get to them but for now I thought you might like a look at some of what's coming. It's mainly suit hardware in these pics — many gloves (including Apollo gloves made for Schmitt, Scott, Engle and Schweickart and a pair of Mercury/Gemini gloves made for Shepard), helmet, snoopy cap, boot, electrical/comms connectors, chest connectors, pockets, med harnesses, suit liners — but there also autographs, signed/rare books, original technical documents, photographs, flown metal coins, Spaceflori moondust, Underwood certified moon flown film, space food, Snoopy memorabilia, 8mm films, moon globes, repro LM plaques — just everything basically.

So please take a look through the pics, higher-res ones are coming. If you see anything on your wish-list and you want to get in ahead of the crowd you can reach me at matt@spaceracemuseum.com, otherwise stay tuned for full listings and more info.

Right, I think I may have slightly underestimated the scale of the interest this post would generate.

I've had over 60 emails already with more coming in hourly. I was expecting to have a few days in hand yet to photograph and start pricing up items and instead I've been caught slightly unprepared.

So, to be fair to everyone I'll continue to post info and photos here by way of a 'sale preview' over the next few days and please be assured that during this period not one person will be purchasing anything yet.

It seems the fairest way to handle the sale is to publish prices on a set date (or dates as I might split the sale into sections e.g. books/autographs/etc just to keep my sanity), then give everyone 24 hours to place orders for what they want; and where there are two or more parties after the same item to then offer the chance to bid higher if interested, until a highest bid is reached. Hopefully that makes sense, please ask questions here if not.

Now, a very important point I forgot to make previously — info about some of the items I will be selling is already available at my website. It is quite significantly out-of-date and I have gathered more info on some of the items there but you can learn plenty from the descriptions.

So to reiterate -

  1. more info/photos coming here soon.
  2. if you've set me an email rest assured I've had it & will be answering over the next day or two.
  3. no sales yet as I'm still gathering prices, please enjoy this preview and take the opportunity to ask questions.

As promised, photos and info about some of the standout items in the collection that aren't already documented on my website.

Complete Gemini Electrical and Medical Harness with Comms Cable. Featuring all parts from the electrodes, to the signal conditioners, to the med / electrical harness and clipping into the comms cable, terminating at cables for each of the headphone cups and mics, plus the oral helmet thermometer.

This represents the entire electrical system of suit - I personally didn't see any other electrical and/or medical harnesses approaching this degree of completeness while I was collecting.

Lightweight comfort glove to be worn inside the A7L / A7LB glove, custom sized to Jim Irwin's hand. Comes in original (opened) packaging. Nice moonwalker suit item.

David Clark MD-3 prototype MOL glove

A lefthand EVA glove from one of the rarest David Clark suit designs, the Manned Orbiting Laboratory MD-series. Adapted from the Gemini G4C, David Clark's prototype was ultimately passed over in favour of Hamilton Standard's rival suit, and never went into full production. Taken from one of only four MD-suits — an extremely rare example.

Blue A7L Spacesuit Gas Connector, Red A6L Spacesuit Gas Connector & Lower Gas Connector

An iconic A7L chest-connector and a partly exposed A6L example, usually seen in suit-testing. The A6L also comes complete with the lower gas connector that was located within the suit and routed the air through the suit's 'plenum' (the network of ducts that circulated air throughout the suit).

Please re-read the thread. No sales yet, I'll post here when I have a completed price-list. A little patience please; I have over 400 items to photograph, describe & price - plus a job and three kids.

Apollo Inflight Garment Electrical Harness

This is the electrical harness and connector that was worn under/through the inflight garment, connecting to the snoopy cap at one end, the med harness at the other and to the command module through the chest mounted socket (via the 'cobra head' comms cable).

Gemini G2C suit-liner, sized for Lockheed Skunkworks test pilot Gary Powers

This is a David Clark Gemini G2C suit-liner, reputedly made for Gary Powers, best known as the pilot of a U2 spy plane shot down & captured over the Soviet Union.

Following his release from the USSR & the subsequent hearings into the incident Powers was recruited by Kelly Johnson of Lockheed, ostensibly for a 'regular' test-pilot role but in reality working for Johnson in the 'Skunkworks' (birthplace of the U2, SR-71 and numerous other secret projects). Precisely what project required Powers to be fitted for an early Gemini suit is at present unknown.

Underwood-Certified Apollo 11 Film Chip

This is a piece of Apollo 11 lunar surface flown film, mounted on a rather faded & worn Underwood certificate. The certificate & the accompanying descriptive text were previously framed together; the identity of WEO III is uncertain but the original seller suggested that it was possible he was a steel/iron magnate in Chicago. The certificate conforms to the classic Underwood format & the signature is still clear. I've added an enhanced colour photo for the sake of clarity.

First of all thanks for your patience folks. It's become clear that setting a price for much of the collection is redundant as I'm receiving many competing offers, so at present the sale is being handled by an informal auction process via email.

If you're interested in any of the items pictured (more coming) or on my website please email me.

Other notable items not pictured or on the site include Code 3 LM and LRV, Liberty Bell flown film lucite, Gemini 4 crew signed book 'Gemini: America's Walk In Space', Gulf Oil 'We Came In Peace' book signed by seven moonwalkers, including Shepard, Irwin and Conrad — a completion project for the deep pocketed close personal friend of Neil Armstrong possibly?

So after a lengthy pause to buy (and start renovating) a house the great sell-off resumes. For the first round of sales I focused almost exclusively on suit items and space food; even so there is still about half of the suit collection yet to be offered for sale and there will be a few more food items available. And alongside that absolutely everything else — books (signed and unsigned), autographs, some small flown items, a colossal collection of 8mm and Super 8 vintage space films, flown metal coins, a lucite or two, manned flight awareness stickers, NASA documents and photos, extremely rare suit contractor documents and photos, patches, covers and all sorts of random collectibles that took my fancy over the years.

As before I'm handling sales via email so if you'd like to receive updates of what's on offer please mail me at matt@spaceracemuseum.com and I'll add you to the list — thanks.
