The National Aviation Hall of Fame Postpones the 2020 Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony

COVID-19, social distancing requirements and travel concerns for our national audience necessitates the postponement of theEnshrinement of the Class of 2020.

With due regard to the safety and health of our Enshrinees, participants, attendees, staff and the city of Dayton, the Board of Trustees of the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) has made the difficult decision to postpone the induction of the Class of 2020.

"The on-going concern regarding the coronavirus pandemic, the unknowns regarding travel and unease in seeking sponsorship when many of our supporters have been hard hit economically are among the reasons that make it impossible for the NAHF to hold our Enshrinement event at a level that adequately honors our Class of 2020" according to President and CEO Amy Spowart. "We appreciate the understanding and support of the Class of 2020, participants, sponsors, NAHF members and the City of Dayton in this decision."

First and foremost, the Board of Trustees of the NAHF would like to express concern for all who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. "Our deepest sympathies are especially with those with loved ones who have passed. To those who are sick, we extend our heartfelt wishes for a full recovery," says Board Chairman Michael Quiello. "Additionally, we are truly inspired by the selfless healthcare workers and first responders around the world who are on the front lines working tirelessly to care for people in need."

Options to reschedule the 2020 Enshrinement, which will be held in Dayton, Ohio, are being explored, including the potential of selecting a date in 2021. Board of Nominations Chairman Fred Gregory shares, "to ensure that NAHF honors the Class of 2020 in the way Enshrinees, attendees, members and sponsors have become accustomed, the Board of Trustees have also decided to defer selection of a Class for 2021."

Vice-Chairman David Brixey says, "If we could share a message with the NAHF's Class of 2020, it would be that we are truly inspired by your achievements and will not disappoint you."

The NAHF staff, with full support of the Board of Trustees, continue to be focused on their mission to honor our nation's aviation heroes, share their stories and educate the public.

  • Planning and execution of our Dayton-based state-of-art Heritage Hall and Education Center continues.

  • In partnership with PBS ThinkTV the NAHF will be launching a new STEAM-based, multi-media education program in 2020. This will include on-line learning as well as classroom curriculum that will be shared free through Crayons to Classrooms.

  • In the coming days, the NAHF will announce a new reciprocal membership program with the National Aeronautic Association and will be co-hosting series of webinars featuring Enshrinees and aviation leaders discussing topics related to our mission and the days ahead for aviation.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame Postpones the 2021 Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony

Travel concerns for our national audience and appreciation for the aviation industry necessitate the postponement of the 2021 Enshrinement.

"With our highest regard to the safety and health of our Enshrinees, participants, attendees, staff and the city of Dayton, the Board of Trustees of the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) have made the difficult decision to postpone this year's Enshrinement event," said NAHF Chair Michael Quiello.

The NAHF Board expressed concern for all who have been impacted by the worldwide pandemic. "We continue to extend our heartfelt wishes to those who have been personally impacted by COVID-19," said Quiello. "Additionally, we are truly inspired by the selfless healthcare workers and first responders around the world who are on the front lines working tirelessly to care for people in need."

The annual Enshrinement ceremony is widely known as the Oscar Night of Aviation and draws a national audience. Included in the annual dinner and ceremony are aviation legends, American heroes, industry leaders, corporate sponsors, elected officials, and lifelong NAHF members. The event has hosted such notables as John Travolta, Harrison Ford, Miles O'Brien, and Dennis Quaid and welcomed many aviation legends like Neil Armstrong, John Glenn, Jackie Cochran, Eileen Collins, and Dick Rutan.

"While there is much to be positive about as the nation is increasingly vaccinated from COVID-19, we are still cautious regarding travel and uneasy in seeking sponsorship when many of our supporters are hard hit economically, "said President and CEO Amy Spowart. "We appreciate the understanding and support of our participants, sponsors, NAHF members, and the City of Dayton in this decision."

The NAHF staff, with the full support of the Board of Trustees, continue to be focused on their mission to honor our nation's aviation heroes, share their stories, and educate the public. Updates to the virtual and physical space, including new hands-on exhibits, and the NAHF curriculum for elementary-age children all continue to move forward.

Awards and other NAHF programs are also taking place in 2021. Board of Nominations Chair Tom Lodge said, "we have everything ready to select and elect the Class of 2022. The voting will take place this summer, on schedule."

Trustee Vice-Chair David Brixey said, "If we could share a message with the NAHF's Class of 2020, it would be that we are truly inspired by your achievements and will not disappoint you. We will honor you and ensure that you will feel appreciated and celebrated."

The NAHF's 2022 Enshrinement will take place in Dayton, OH at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

National Aviation Hall of Fame release
The National Aviation Hall of Fame Recognizes the "Class of 2020"

While their enshrinement event is postponed, their induction is not.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) Board of Trustees are proud to share that the vote to formally recognize the NAHF Class of 2020 as Enshrinees was unanimous.

Trustee Phil Roberts made the formal motion at the spring meeting of the Board on May 15th in Dayton. "It didn't seem right (to me) that their Enshrinement was canceled twice and their induction put in limbo," Roberts said.

Roberts's motion read "That the Class of 2020 be recognized as Enshrinees of the NAHF as of September 27, 2020. And that each of these individuals is afforded the choice of a future NAHF function to be "presented and ceremoniously enshrined" at the earliest possible time that is mutually convenient to the NAHF and the individual."

The NAHF's Enshrinement Ceremony, widely known as the Oscar Night of Aviation, was canceled in May 2020 due to COVID restrictions. Earlier this month, the Board voted to cancel the 2021 Enshrinement due to COVID uncertainties and the impact on the NAHF's biggest supporters, the aviation industry.

"While there is much to be positive about as the nation is increasingly vaccinated from COVID-19, we are still cautious regarding travel and uneasy in seeking sponsorship when many of our supporters are among the hardest hit economically, "said President and CEO Amy Spowart.

Enshrinement draws the best in aviation.

The Class of 2020 is now recognized among those ranks.

"The NAHF Class of 2020, is a diverse group representing a broad range of enduring contributions to both the advancement of flight and the exploration of space. We believe that this is an excellent class and we are looking forward to celebrating them all", NAHF Board of Trustees Chair Michael Quiello said. "From pioneer Bullard to visionaries Faget, Sullivan Garrett and Kaminski, to aerospace hero Gordon, the NAHF's Class of 2020 represents the best in aviation."

"Regardless of COVID restrictions and the other hurdles in our path, we will celebrate our next induction in the Birthplace of Aviation", Spowart said. "It is our goal to hold the 2022 Enshrinement Dinner and Ceremony in Dayton, Ohio. We are eager to recognize the Class of 2020, induct the Class of 2022, and honor all 253 women and men who are the NAHF."

The NAHF Class of 2020

  • (The late) Second Lieutenant Eugene J. Bullard, USAF - WWI Pilot; First African American combat pilot; Denied in the U.S., flew for France; and is one of the highest decorated pilots including the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur.

  • (The late) Captain Richard "Dick" F. Gordon, USN - Naval Aviator; Test Pilot; Bendix Trophy Winner; Gemini 11 Pilot; Command Module Pilot Apollo 12; Back-up Commander Apollo 12; and part of the design team for the Space Shuttle.
