The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston, Texas will host a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 24, 2017 honoring the late Maj. Robert H. Lawrence, U.S. Air Force, on the 50th anniversary of his selection as the first African-American astronaut in June 1967. Tragically, he died in the crash of a training jet aircraft in December 1967, but if he had survived, he would almost certainly been transferred to NASA in August 1969 along with seven other Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL) pilots who flew the early shuttle missions and later led NASA. Local elected officials, NASA astronauts current and past, and others will offer tributes to Maj. Lawrence. In addition, a new portrait of him will be unveiled. The reception is free and open to the public, but attendees must RSVP (see flyer for details). |

From John Charles on Facebook: Today we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the selection of Robert Lawrence as the first African American astronaut in an event at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum here on Houston. The logo designed by Tim Gagnon graced the podium and was embroidered as patches for sale in the museum gift shop. The portrait by Dennis Black will honor Lawrence in the museum's astronaut hall of fame. John wrote a tribute to Lawrence for The Space Review, "A Hidden Figure in Plain Sight." | |
