National Aviation Hall of Fame release
National Aviation Hall of Fame reveals names of four to be Enshrinee 'Class of 2017'

Inductees' contributions span the dawn of the jet age through U.S. manned space programs

Today the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) publicly revealed the names of four individuals elected as the Enshrinee Class of 2017, each of whom will be inducted at a formal ceremony next fall. NAHF Enshrinement Director Ron Kaplan, revealed the names before an audience of nearly 1,000 attendees at a special session of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention in Orlando, Florida. Kaplan and NAHF Chairman of the Board, William R. Harris, Jr., were accompanied onstage by several former enshrinees and the Great grand-niece of Orville and Wilbur Wright.

The announcement followed their presentation of the NAHF 2016 Combs Gates Award, a $20,000 cash prize, to author David McCullough for his best-selling 2015 book, "The Wright Brothers."

The NAHF Class of 2017 represents a broad range of enduring contributions dating from the dawn of the jet age through the manned exploration of space. The four will be formally enshrined at a venue and on a 2017 date to be announced by the NAHF soon. The Class of 2017 is:

  • Maj. Gen. Charles Bolden, Jr., USMC (Ret) –34 year Marine Corps aviation career included 14 years as member of NASA Astronaut Corps. Vietnam War fighter pilot and four-time Shuttle veteran who went on to become NASA Administrator.

  • The late Cmdr. Malcolm Scott Carpenter, USN – Navy test pilot that as one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts became the second American to orbit the earth. Helped design the Apollo lunar module and developed underwater training for spacewalks.

  • Robert J. Gilliland – Air Force jet fighter and test pilot personally recruited by Kelly Johnson to lead Lockheed Skunk Works testing of its record-breaking SR-71 spy plane. Has logged more test-flight hours above Mach 3 than any other pilot.

  • The late Sir Frank Whittle – U.K.-based "Founder of the Jet Age," who built the first practical turbojet engine in 1937. Sir Whittle's subsequent engine technology led directly to development of the jet aircraft industry in the U.S., to which Sir Whittle immigrated in 1976.
Each year, the NAHF Board of Nominations, a voting body comprised of 140-plus aviation professionals nationwide, selects a handful of previously nominated air and space pioneers to be recognized for their achievements with enshrinement into the NAHF. Since its founding in 1962, 233 men and women have been so honored.

The 55th Annual NAHF Enshrinement Dinner & Ceremony is open to the public and reservations will be available by advance purchase from the NAHF.

The National Aviation Hall of Fame is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in Dayton, Ohio in 1962 and chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1964. Its mission is to honor America's aerospace legends to inspire future leaders, which it does through a 17,000 square-foot public Learning Center featuring interactive exhibits, a youth education program, other public outreach programs, its annual enshrinement ceremony, and collaboration with like-minded organizations.

National Aviation Hall of Fame to hold 2017 Enshrinement Ceremony at the Alliance Air Show in Fort Worth, Texas

"Oscar Night of Aviation" to honor four air and space pioneers at October celebration

The Board of Trustees of the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF) is pleased to announce that its 55th Annual Enshrinement Ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show taking place in Fort Worth, Texas, on Oct. 28-29, 2017.

The formal NAHF dinner and ceremony, widely known as America's "Oscar Night of Aviation," will see the Class of 2017 formally inducted on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Fort Worth Alliance Airport. Admission to the public will be by advance reservation. Approximately 1,000 aviation business leaders, public officials and enthusiasts are expected to attend, including many participating air show performers such as 2008 Enshrinee, Sean D. Tucker.

"We are thrilled that the Board has chosen to make the most of the opportunity afforded to us by holding Enshrinement at Alliance," said Enshrinement Chairman David Brixey. "The Fort Worth Alliance Air Show is a world-class event attended by over 120,000 people annually. To present our Enshrinement ceremony and the Hall of Fame's story at such a premier aviation gathering is outstanding."

Dayton, the permanent home and headquarters of the non-profit 501(c)(3) NAHF, has been the host city of the ceremony and dinner since 1964.

"While the Board appreciates what Dayton has provided for Enshrinement, as a Congressionally-chartered national organization we are called to make our mission known to the rest of the United States," explained Chairman Bill Harris.

According to NAHF Enshrinement Director Ron Kaplan, with the board decision now official, planning for the event begins in earnest.

"What an exciting opportunity to share the Hall of Fame's mission while honoring our new enshrinees before over 100,000 fans of flight," said Kaplan. "We look forward to working with the very robust Texas aviation and aerospace communities as we now bring our ceremony planning up to full speed."

The Enshrinee Class of 2017 to be inducted on Oct. 28 is Major General Charles F. Bolden, Jr., USMC (Ret); the late Commander Malcolm Scott Carpenter, USN; test pilot Robert J. Gilliland, and the late Sir Frank Whittle.

Considered a true national treasure, the non-profit 501(c)(3) NAHF has served since its founding in 1962 as the only Congressionally-chartered aviation hall of fame. The NAHF honors and celebrates the people — the pilots, inventors, astronauts, industry leaders, engineers and scientists — who have built America into the aerospace leader it is today. By leveraging and honoring its unique status, and the rich legacies of its 233 men and women enshrinees, to date, the NAHF aims to inspire future leaders yet to make their mark on air and space.

The NAHF is located within the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
