I attended the first day of the Soviet/Chinese Technical Forum held at the British Interplanetary Society's (BIS) headquarters in London yesterday (21 May).

Today's event (part 2) was sold out too, I didn't manage to get a ticket.

Guests included Viktor Afanasyev, Sergei Krikalev and Anatoly Artsebarsky. They were available for a one hour Q&A session, photos and autographs.

The event was well attended and with a relaxed atmosphere. Throughout the day there were a number of presentations on the Russian and Chinese space programmes, past and present.

More scheduled for today with Helen Sharman attending. Well done all of the presenters, organisers and cosmonauts.

This was the 36th annual Forum, first held in January 1980. It is one of the most popular events in the BIS calendar and this year was the best to date.

With an international audience of over 40 attending to hear 16 presentations by 13 presenters, in addition to two Q&A sessions by the cosmonauts, plus Helen Sharman on Sunday.

The presenters included Dave Shayler, Tony Quine, Andrew Thomas (no, not the astronaut), Gurbir Singh, Brian Harvey, Oleg Sokolov, Bart Hendrickx, Elena Luchitskaya (from IBMP), Daria Komissarova (also from IBMP) , Andrew Knight, Phil Clark, Galina Nechitailo (from the Institute of Biochemical Physics), Bert Vis, and Asif Siddiqi.

Full reports will appear in Spaceflight and on various Society media platforms, and papers are planned for publication in future issues of Space Chronicle.

The 37th Forum in June 2017 is already being planned.

A brief history of the BIS Soviet/Chinese Forum is to be published in the June 2016 issue of Space Chronicle (JBIS Supplement Vol. 69)

With six contributors to Dom Phelan's book 'Cold War Space Sleuths' present at the event (Clark, Harvey, Hendrickx, Shayler, Siddiqi, and Vis) a photo opportunity was taken with Dom to add to the fun and memories.

All times are CT (US)
