Astronaut Barry Wilmore gave a presentation at the Space Night event in Washington, DC last night. During the presentation Capt. Wilmore explained in considerable detail many of the complexities of being a crewmember aboard the ISS and some of the lighter moments as well. He described the experience of the launch aboard the Soyuz spacecraft, the undertaking involved in performing an EVA, performing tasks aboard the ISS and the landing aboard the Soyuz. He invited three people from the audience to come up to the front of the lecture room and lie down side by side with their legs elevated and explained that this was the way that the crew aboard the Soyuz were positioned for six hours prior to landing and the sequence of events during re-entry and touchdown. After the lecture a 20 minute film about his mission on the ISS was shown.A Q&A session followed and I asked about the missions of the commercial spacecraft due to start flying in 2017. Afterwards Capt. Wilmore took time to pose for pictures and to sign autographs. I found the evening to be very informative and fun. | |
