Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society release
Marketing the Moon with Jim Lovell

Thursday, May 5, 2016, 7 p.m.
Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest, Illinois

The Historical Society presents Marketing the Moon with Captain Lovell. The program features a presentation by author Richard Jurek about NASA's efforts to nurture public support of the space program. Following the presentation, Captain James Lovell will share his personal experiences as a NASA astronaut.

Primed by science fiction, magazine articles, and TV appearances, Americans were a receptive audience for NASA's pioneering brand journalism. Richard Jurek will tell the story of the sophisticated efforts by NASA to market the idea of space travel — through press releases, bylined articles, product placement (Tang!) and radio and television features. American astronauts, who signed exclusive agreements with Life magazine, became the heroic and patriotic faces of the program.

Captain Lovell piloted Gemini 7, commanded Gemini 12, orbited the moon on Apollo 8, and commanded Apollo 13.

I hope Jurek writes another book soon. He's been living off this one for a long time. It's like watching a remora fish sucking up to a shark.

I am actually on the road, deep in research on the next book -- it's going to be great. But this event with Capt Lovell, I am very excited about. It is a dream come true. We don't often get too many space events out here, so I do hope many cSers show up. It promises to be a good show!

Lovell was great at MIT on Wednesday. I hope that he isn't too tuckered out for the May 5th gig.

Last night's event was great! Both the talk by Richard Jurek and the Q&A with Capt. Lovell were excellent.

Thanks, Richard!!! It was so great to see so many familiar faces at the MtM event in Lake Forest, and especially fellow cSers like Richard and David Chudwin and others. Thanks to all who came out and help make this fundraiser a success. Hope you all had a good time!

The poster is great - when you first got interested in space program history, you probably never thought you'd get top billing over Jim Lovell for an Apollo-related event!
